2010 fabia Tdi owner - no locking wheelbolt key!

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

New member here after buying a 2010 Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI

(Makes a change from owning Mk2 & Mk3 golf gti's for the past 16 years!)

The car was purchased privately & unfortunately the previous owner has miss laid the key for the locking wheelbolts

Ill try to pop over to the local dealership to see if they can match the bolts up to one of their master key sets ,(what will the cost be?) but failing that Ill have to try & get them off!

I have a set of Irwin extractor nuts, but quickly looking I think the outside diameter of the extractor bolt itself is too large to fit into the recessed hole of the alloy

(the approx diameter of the recessed hole is about 30mm) . Whats the best course of action to remove them without damaging the alloys?

Ive attached a quick pic of the locking bolt type (cloverleaf/6 pint starfish type groove) & wheel type

Thanks for any help

Mike

They will have a master set. Ask in the parts dept to match one from the set, they shouldn't charge for this.

Thanks. Would it be best to keep this type of locking wheelnut, or go for a different design?I see on ebay theres some genuine skoda ones  with an internal spline design (not sure if these ar a newer type or not

Ive been reading of a few of my type that have been rounded/damaged etc. Not sure if this is due to careless use though!

If used correctly the later type (yours) are more secure.

They are strictly not to be done up with impact tools though.

If it was me I would pop down to the local dealers or tyre place and then just ditch them and fit standard bolts.

Its not very common these days for standard fit wheels to be stolen.

Or get some genuine ones from your local dealer and order a spare key.

I have lock nuts on my Octavia and the only reason they are still on is the previous owner supplied 2 keys.

Phoned a couple of the local dealers this week & explained the situation. Dealer 1 would remove the locknuts using their master key & sell me a genuine set of replacement locking wheelbolts for £45 + vat (cant buy the key alone apparently)

Dealer 2 gave me the same response (that you cant buy the keys alone) but offered an alternative new aftermarket locking wheelbolt set for £23. They used their master set to remove the old bolts & I sneakily noticed that the key number was 770. Also loosened & re-torqued the other bolts as they said they'd been fitted too tight

Great service & all I need now is a 770 key if anyones got a spare one
