Featured Replies

I've worked in the HDD industry for 10yrs and have learn't a few tricks on securely destroying HDDs in my time. Would people appreciate a guide on how to do that?

I shall do it at the weekend with pictures

I'm a technomuppet and as such my fear is not destroying a hard drive properly when I scrap a PC, so I use my angle grinder with a diamond grit cutting wheel. Is this the wrong approach? Is there an easier way?

That is one way of doing it! I use a method that means you can do it in the evening without disturbing the neighbours.

Sounds good to me, but my neighbours are already reasonably disturbed, but that's normal for Lancashire. :D

Google active@killdisk. Used that a few times to delete HDD's with bank info and hardcore porn on before.

One or two hits with a hammer till the platters shatter does the job.

Hope you remembered to back the porn up first!

I made a bird scarer out of the platters from my last failed Seagate drive, the latest failed Seagate is still under warranty, so being RMA'ed.

(I swear Seagate drives are like mice, I havent bought one in YEARS, so where do they keep coming from?? Breeding in dark corners/under the floor boards is my guess).

+1

That's my method, too

All this 19th century hammer action, it seems I must be a techie with my angle grinder.

put the platters in the microwave.

Throw in the Woodburner? :D

I just take mine apart and take the physical disc and use them as coasters! (they are the perfect size, unless they are the little 2.5" laptop type discs)
