  • Out of that list the 330d XDrive is the one I would go for, I don't have any experience of the Xdrive system but if they are still using the straight six diesel layout, I love the engine in my current

  • I'd recommend a 3 series estate. A good chassis and a punchy 4 pot diesel should keep you entertained enough. For 25k you'd be able to get a next to new one. Or if you want the extra 2 cylinders, a ca

Is that the one with red leather on?

Didn't realise they existed but certainly an interesting combination of car and definitely rare enough!

Don't really like the style of Infinity I'm afraid and I've had a French car once. Not going back there.

Can see myself ending up with a diesel Golf :notme:

might as well buy it with a Skoda or a Seat badge and spend the savings on something else

Yup I read that. The only thing is that the boot is even more ickle than a normal beemer which is ickle anyway.

Too rare to be a realistic option I think. Still 335hp rwd

I was digging around for 3.0l Audis but they seem to be a bit crazy priced even compared to the beemers.

Check out 3lt diesel A6's as the discounts on them new meant they weren't far off A4 prices and they have a much higher quality interior and a better spec.

245 diesel is a peach too, easily a match for 330d/530d engine.

I had the 240ps version in my A4 and it does make a nice growly (for a diesel) noise. Although personally I feel the BMW engine just shades it a little.

New focus RS, wouldn't lose too much money on it either as they hold their money well

I'm thinking for now to get something nice but not too mental.

Then possibly get something seriously stupid in a few years.

Was looking at XFRs. 500hp Jag might be entertaining.

In the past 6 years I've purchased 4 vehicles two of which were over £20k.

The Passat was £24k and a 2.0TDi because I was doing a lot of motorway work. It's great at what it does.

But the OP doesn't do that many miles and is not too bothered about fuel economy.

I used to be in the OP's situation and if I was again would I be buying a sensible diesel Golf or Passat? Not a chance. As competent as these motors are I won't look back on them as I do to my old V6 and V8 Petrols and Turbo Petrols.

A 4 pot diesel if you need economy or pile on the motorway miles but certainly not if you don't need to.

XF Jag? VW Touareg? 5 Series Beemer?

XF is on the cusp. 4yr old from an indy they look great, 2yr old from jag they look over priced.

I think it's got to be semi sensible for now maybe stupid later

What about an Audi S5 or S4?

Went into BMW today.

It's amazing how nice dealers are to you when they think you can afford a £45k motor. Bit of a difference form the days of going into Arnold Clark vauxhall and basically being told to **** off unless you had a deposit in your hand.

Was talking about a 330d xdrive M-Sport which was list £45k and they were leasing for £420 deposit and £420 a month. He was even talking about buying my trade-ins and giving me the cash.

tbh don't know much about leasing I've always stuck with straight HP or a personal loan.

Needs looking into especially the end of the contract. Not really interested unless there is equity in the car at the end to use as a deposit for the next one.

In which case leasing is not for you - no equity via personal contract hire and possible equity at the end of PCP.

Personal Lease. Just hand it back.

PCP. May have some equity but doubtful and if so won't be much. Either hand it back. Part Ex it and try and cover balloon payment or pay balloon payment and keep it.

If you hand it back on either scheme you will have needed to keep it in very good condition to avoid being charged.

Just handed a BMW back after 40 months myself.

 Yeah it's crossed my mind.

I think for now I need an 'everything' car. In a few year might get a diesel focus and something seriously stupid for the weekend.

I've always had a thing for caterhams. Might do that.

I have found BMW dealers quite pleasent places to be,

even with just picking up parts the people I have spoken to have seemed genuinely into the cars.

A quick look on Broadspeed shows you can get a 335D Touring M sport X drive for about £150 more than the 330D version. They are showing roughly £9.5K off and a pretty huge discount on the 330D too :)

Yes even when SWMBO bought her 1 series it was the cheapest car on the forecourt but they really seemed to try to get a deal.

Two other dealers nearby so I'll pay them a visit soon. Think I have settled on a 6 cylinder 3 series. The interiors were just lovely places to be and I'm old enough now to see the appeal of an 8 speed auto.

Good news was that the M-Sport Xdrive doesn't have M-Sport suspension. I really didn't want sports suspension but I liked the body kit so spot on.

What is this Broadspeed palace of miracles?

Would I have issues dealing with my tradeins or can I wave their prices at my local dealers?

BMW's take on the ZF gearbox is sublime. Almost a quick as a DSG, much smoother and if it's linked to the sat nav like on my Baby Beemer, it's a very clever thing indeed :) Impressed my friend and colleague with the TT RS no end. He reckoned it was possibly the most impressive thing about the car.

I've not driven one yet, I might think it's ****e.
