  • Out of that list the 330d XDrive is the one I would go for, I don't have any experience of the Xdrive system but if they are still using the straight six diesel layout, I love the engine in my current

  • I'd recommend a 3 series estate. A good chassis and a punchy 4 pot diesel should keep you entertained enough. For 25k you'd be able to get a next to new one. Or if you want the extra 2 cylinders, a ca

I've just read that Audi are moving away from proper Quattro and going to something similar to the lesser (imho) Haldex system in the A4 and presumably higher models :(

Been looking at this price range for when my citigo goes back. You say fuel economy doesn't matter...... My list of maybes is currently:

C63 AMG

Lexus ISF

BMW M3

Audi S5

I think I'm due another midlife crisis and currently the C63 is top of my list.

Good luck

I think the age of those motors to get them in budget worked against me.

Although I want something 'nice' it also has to work most days.

I did look up the C63, just for the noise

The Issue is we can hardly get anywhere in any direction at any pace greater than the NSL & keep our licences.

So as well to drive comfortable, enjoy the noise and also be in something with the Cloak of Invisibility for when you can press on.

Maybe as well to have the AWD as well, seeing as where we need to go to be away from the cameras.

Change in circumstance means a change in cars.

I've got two cars to trade in, approximate value £17k.

Looking for suggestions for something nice and/or interesting up to say £25k.

Does need to be reasonably practical and reliable. So probably newish.

Fuel and mpg doesn't matter too much if it's not mad.

Had considered Audi with quattro of some sort.

BMW 320d xdrive / 330d xdriv

Toyota Hilux

Mitsubushi L200

Volvo V60

Quickly ran out of ideas

Didn't like Mercs when I looked and Jags were overpriced.

Don't think you'll go far wrong with the BMWs, so why not combine XDrive with practicality......X3? I'm sure you could bend a deal out of someone!

Your thinking is sound but I just don't like the style of the Xn BMWs and I'm not a huge fan of how SUVs drive.

For some reason the manlyness of a pickup does appeal but I suspect after a few commutes I'd be wishing I was in something else. Ditto for a Defender.

How about a Discovery or one of the newer Ford Rangers in Wildtrak form?

Plenty Ford Rangers sitting in the compound in Coupar Angus,

or check out AM Philips on an Isuzu,  there are a nice selection available.

Or just stop and see what is at Autoecosse Burrelton,

Plenty sitting that are looking well priced, & that is just the asking prices.

3.6 v6 Superb?

I've driven big pickups for work vehicles (Navara and Ranger). At first you think great,

After a month you are desperate for a decent handling comfortable car.

Lee

One car TG liked  The Oz version of the VXR, you can probably get 2nd hand for around the price you are thinking of. Or even a UK version

Family sized, and quick enough to get you out of trouble.

The Cerbera is an amazing looking car with a fantastic interior. I remember being utterly mesmerised when I saw one in the flesh for the first time.

I do really like the look of the Volvo XC60, but you said you didn't want a crossover. How about something really unusual like an Infinity Q50 or a (Citroen) DS5?

Golf gtd estate

Don't really like the style of Infinity I'm afraid and I've had a French car once. Not going back there.

Can see myself ending up with a diesel Golf :notme:

What about the Amarok? Don't know to much about them though.

I think they're quite nice for a pickup. But probably Logiclee has nailed it. I'll like it for a short while them wish I'd bought a car.

Right now thing I think I'll look at more seriously...

Focus ST Estate

Seat Leon Cupra estate (though I'll need some convincing of the interiors on them they look deeply dreary)

BMW 3 touring 330d XDrive (or 320d xdrive if the 3l looks too dear). 335i I would love (just passed the magic 300hp) but they're rarer than hens teeth

VW Passat bitdi (on the edge of budget like the 330d)

And maybe I should look again at a Mk3 VRS estate and get it remapped? 220hp just don't seem enough.

I think your first 3 choices all deserve test drives!

The Focus ST will be a hoot, especially if you're thinking of the 250ps petrol? Can't comment on the 184ps diesel.

The Leon is a great looking car and will be mighty quick. (same engine as the Golf R???) Might suffer in the handling department and the interior does look classic VAG dreariness.

The BMW will be the most refined and will most likely hold it's value the best if bought near new. The 330d will get a shift on, I'm always amazed by how much grunt 6cyl diesels have!

Agreed with the above, the six cylinder diesels are deceptive in that it doesn't feel quick but you do just keep going and going and going...

normal Passat, or the CC ?

Even in an X5.
