Diagnose me whilst I await my recovery wagon!

Featured Replies

Afternoon!

The challenge is to diagnose what's up with my car before the recovery wagon gets here!

Symptoms; really rough idle, then just cut out altogether. Will not start now. Turns over but no start. Turn over is quite violent too so not keen on doing it too many times.

Any ideas?

Much obliged!

Sounds like a plug or coil issue to me. Really needs a scan to see what's going on

Coil pack is my bet.

Im a dirty diesel. My bad. Should have said that!

Your profile shows a Skoda Fabia VRS, but you posted in the Octavia section? What car is it?

It's an Octavia vrs CR TDi

Won't be a coil pack then, or a spark plug. I'd guess at cambelt jumped a tooth or so.

Urghhhhhh I hope not

I think Rusty might be right here. Didn't realise it was a diesel

and has recovery arrived yet?

has someone put petrol in it?

Yes I'm home now. Recovery turned up. Climed underneath, shouted, watch this. *Thump thump thump* on the bottom of the tank... Fired up first time. So looks like fuel pump is knackered

Cheaper than my cambelt guess anyway.

Well, that's hoping it is actually that. Seemed coincidental to fire up immediately after a couple of thuds where the pump would be. I rang Volkswerk (a garage in the north east) to book it in and they said "yep. Common fault on those" so fingers crossed! They're a pretty reliable garage so hopefully they'll do a quick investigate before going in for the kill with the new pump
