Steering becoming more heavy or is it just me?

Featured Replies

Just recently my steering feels alot heavier than it used to ( I think ). Ive made sure that the steering isn't in sport mode and also kept checking tyre pressure and they are also fine. Anybody else who may have come across this?

You checked your arms haven't become weaker? [emoji13]

Had that problem a couple of months ago. Apparently it very common for some Audi models some MY ago, but they still have some problems with the steering rack (not know the correct translation for it but the gear unit for steering..:)). Had my replaced and now it works just fine!

I know this is the obvious answer but have you checked the tyre pressures? with a few different gauges from a few garages, if the have less air in the contact patch gets bigger, this has the effect of heaver steering. Also the pneumatic trail is increased so you will get increased self aligning torque., Are the tyres new or old as this has an effect too. If its a lot heaver i don't think it will be due to tyres.

I believe the steering is EPAS type so its basically a closed loop torque assisted servo drive, that will ether work or it wont, Usualy, i doubt if the motor has demagnetized. That only leaves the rack itself, there is the possibility it has leaked all its lubricant if the gaiter is ripped.

There is a few possibility's, i would rule out all the basic ones listed above first.

I also find it hard to turn the steering wheel around with just one hard when parking, I do check pressures regularly, not sure if it was always like that...

When you are asking a question like this it helps enormously if you provide some background information:

What model of car? Engine capacity and type? Car/Tyre mileage? Tyre size? Over what period/distance have you been aware of the change? Does it occur during normal driving and cornering or parking? Have you tried modifying the steering mode to see what effect if any it has on the problem? What tyre pressures are you actually running at now? Can you indicate a percentile in the change (10% - 50%)?

I love a game of "Twenty Questions" as much as the next person but the more information you can provide up front the more useful and specific the responses will be.
