Windows 10 DVD player

Featured Replies

We've just had a few updates on our Win 10 machines now we can't play DVD's, things were ok before the latest update.

I've read that there are problems with playing DVD, no player comes with Win 10, correct? and they don't support/or provide any Media player with Win10.

So I've downloaded VLC media player as suggested on various websites but it doesn't play certain DVD's, won't play any Blueray discs so a bit hit and miss.

What's wrong, what can I get online to play all discs?

Thanks

make sure the drivers for the drive are working and installed properly, I've never had any problems with VLC but I don't normally play things from disc

Ok a bit of a correction on my original post.

I can get the VLC media player to play DVD's ok but it won't play Blueray discs. All discs played in our Win 10 machines including Blueray before the update. All drivers up to date so it says.

I take it when you use the open disc menu, you are selecting the blu-ray radio button on the disc tab in VLC?.

M$ arent allowed to bundle the commercial codecs for licensing reasons (ie they wont pay); and also wont use the free ones (because they dont like the idea of free software).

I use Daum Potplayer (yeah I know); it is biased towards Korean users (by default it lists Korean TV channels), but comes in English and does everything I want. I havent tried it with a BR though - mainly because I dont have a suitable player or disk.

^^^ Tried that, still won't play Blu-ray discs.

Are we talking laptop or desktop unit here?

Laptop.

What brand and type of drive is in there?. I take it they are top end machines to have Blu-Ray drives installed.

Have you checked for updates for the Blue Ray software supplied with your laptop?

I have upgraded to W10 from W8/8.1, but my DVD software is supplied by hp.

If you want a decent software player then try Cyberlink's PowerDVD 14 or 15 Ultra editions.

They're not cheap, but they're about the best you can get.

To answer all questions

We have both got laptops, mine a 4 year old HP and the wifes must be around 5 years old, that's an Acer.

We both upgraded to Win10 from Win7 last year. My wife uses her laptop for playing DVD's, I don't think I've ever played a DVD in my HP laptop.

Anyway the Blu ray discs won't play in either machine, should they? My wife claims to have played Blu ray in hers (I'm beginning to wonder if that's so) before she had an update on her machine last week.

So the question has altered a little, should we be able to play Blu ray discs in our Win10 machines or do I need to purchase/upgrade the drive(s) in one or the other to be able to play them?

Many thanks with the help thus far. My wife thinks everything should work ok on computers, I know different and keep telling her, no dear it isn't always that simple. :x

If you go to device manager, go to cd/dvd drives, it should list your drive by name and model number. if you let us know that, we can confirm or deny it is capable of playing Blu-rays for you.

To be honest, most laptops are basic DVD read/write drives, so unless it is a top end machine or has had an aftermarket upgrade, then it probably is not capable of playing Blu-ray discs.

Hope it helps

^^^ I think you are correct,  may not be capable of playing Blu ray

It lists my DVD/CD Rom drive  as HP TS-L633R

Just done a search on a couple of pc parts websites, and that unit appears to be a lightscribe CD/DVD writer unit, so it would seem that is the reason that you are not able to play Blu-rays.

There is a website stating that the unit can play blu-rays with a firmware update, but to be honest, the site was flakey at best and I would not trust the info as true.

Ok thanks for that, a lightscribe it is.

I think my missus will be upgrading her laptop soon, suprised she hasn't done it sooner, so will make sure she gets something that will play most discs if they don't cost the earth.

Most laptops that have a Blu-ray drive start around £950 and go on to about £1500, so you really need to love your Blu-rays to pay that sort of money.

You can buy an external blu ray drive for nit very much. My laptop doesn't have a built in dvd so I ended up buying an external one. Works well
