2.0 tdi 170bhp Fuel Pressure problem £1500 spent and still not working

Evening all,

 

No prior symptoms to issue. Driving along when engine workshop caption comes on and a flashing glow plug light, car goes into limp mode. I pull over and switch off. Engine wouldn't restart. Diagnostic code is P0087. Took car to garage and they diagnose a High Pressure Fuel Pump fault. They replace it and charge me £1500. They said they had a good look for debris in the system and said fuel was clean with no swarf/filings.

 

Took car home and no problems. Next morning car running fine for about 20 minutes when same symptom occurred. Goes to limp home mode and flashing glow light. Does it 3 or 4 times and each time a switch off and a restart cures problem. After about 10 more mins car loses majority of power and as well as flashing glow plug light I get an engine management system light as well.  Diagnostic at garage gives low fuel pressure in common rail.

 

Garage's first thought is perhaps a faulty high-lift pump.  

 

Any advice.  I don't want to spend much more money as £1500 has hurt the piggy bank. I've read of HPFPs spitting filings and swarf into the injectors. Any thoughts or advice appreciated!

Usually when a HPFP fails it will contaminate the system. You won't see the contamination with the naked eye, the fragments are very small.

Is there a remedy? Total flush of the system?

The correct repair should have been a new HPFP, new injectors (the high pressure pipes should be replaced with injectors), a new fuel filter and a flush of the low pressure side of the system inc draining the fuel tank.

what's a good price and how long will it take to replace all 4 injectors?

Do you think it's worth while speaking to Skoda? Any chance of them contributing to the fix? 

check the tank sender unit has a very fine filter no it.

it is most likely PPD system.

 

Fuel pump, 4x Unit Injector Pump, 4x injector, high pressure lines, fuel lines, filters.

 

It is better to buy new car I guess.

Injectors are rebuildable, high pressure lines can be cleaned, as can fuel lines. The necessary filters aren't a big deal. You should look inside the fuel tank when fuel is very low with a borescope and look around for dirt. Else drain tank and flush with kerosene. Other members may be able to advice on the testing of the fuel pump & high pressure fuel regulator valve. That is an expensive item, but like the injectors, it appears to be separable and so there is a very good chance you can open, clean and rebuild it. There may be a kit to refurbish it. You don't just need a new car. The people here are here to help, and I guess buying a new car is not the kind of help you were thinking of.

What did happen by the way, all those years ago?
