Cigarette socket

Featured Replies

Looking to have my dash cam connected to the cigarette socket permanently but when you switch off ignition it stays powered up, is there any way it can stay connected without draining the battery.

Don't bother with the 12v socket, it is permanent live and nothing you can do about it. Best bet is a piggy back fuse and a 12v socket to plug you're dash cam in to that. That's how I did mine and many people have done the same. I've done a write up somewhere, I'll try and link it.

Yup, same as above. Got the front and rear both wired into the fuse box using a piggy back fuse.

Cheers jonro2009, seen you post earlier after I posted my question, I'll get the parts tomorrow and get to work on it. If many people have done it must be simple enough even with my little knowledge of car electrics. My friend who has a new golf says that he can switch the jumpers in the fuse box so I thought it may have been the same on the Fabia Vrs.

jonro2009 I've just had a wee look at the side panel on my Vrs and it looks a permanent fixture or does it just prise off, I remember in my mk1 vrs that was where the fusebox was.

Ignition feed from fuse box for an auxiliary power supply

You could even get an Auto-Electrician (or anybody who knows what they're doing :D) to run it into the back of the fuse box from behind. Then just have a normal fuse in like the rest of the fuses. Looks standard then :)

On the monte the side panel is easily prised off but it's obvious, I would t have thought the vRS would be any different. There is a small indentation near the top left of the panel that you can put a flat headed screwdriver or trim tool in

Under the steering wheel on the mk 2.

Yup. Its the bottom bit of trim near your knee's on the mk2.

Put your hand underneath it and gently pull. Should pop off (:

Cheers for the info guys, jonro2009 I'll take a look tomorrow and try and prise it off, would be interested to hear from any other Mk2 Vrs owners if they can prise off the side panel. peter3197 & fabiamk2se I am aware where the fuses are on the Mk2 Vrs it is the side panel that I need access too, but if I cannot access it I'll put the female cigarette socket hidden somewhere else.

Cheers the noo.

The female socket I used had a flat belly and a flange either side so you could secure it to a flat surface with a couple of self tappers. If the side panel doesn't come off I'd be tempted to secure the socket underneath the dash, below the fuse box. It would actually make it more accessible if you ever wanted to plug something else in.

I prised the side panel off on my green line so yours should come off.

Sounds just perfect jonro2009 where did you purchase the socket.

I think it was a well known auction site, I'll look at my purchase history and let you know

Cheers for that jonro2009.

Cheers for that jonro2009.

This is the one I purchased, I connected the red wire to the piggy back fuse and the I put a ring connector on the end of he black wire and earthed it to the chassis.

It's extremely easy to do the wiring, the trim makes it fiddly,mo recommend getting some trim pulling tools, they are dirt cheap and a nice little addition to a tool box.

Cheers jonro2009, had a look in the 2 autopart shops here in Oban but they have nothing like it, so just ordered the socket and the piggy back fuse. Will need to have a wee look for a trim pulling tool too, ta very much for info, I'll post on this thread when job done at weekend.

Happy to help. Any questions overt the weekend just ask. Oban, lovely part of the country but not the best for specialist bits. What size of piggy back did you order? Mini or standard blade? Don't forget you will need an extra fuse to go in the holder along with the original one you remove.

You're right Oban is a beautiful place to live, I bought  the mini blade which arrived today just awaiting the socket and the trim pulling tools, I'll do it at weekend and post on here with result, cheers the noo.

Hi jonro2009, just had a look and the side panel will come off, seems a bit tight but if I take my time it will move. Another point, you say 2 in from right on bottom row is number 17 fuse, on my Vrs it's number 2 which is air conditioning system with no fuse in the space would it be ok to put it there, and what size of fuse should I use for camera. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this kind of stuff, I can't understand why there would be no fuse in number 2 when air con works.

That's a bit confusing, I was under the impression the fuse layout under the dash would be the same. My 2013 plate monte is fuse 17, can't remember what it is assigned to I chose it as it was a switched live.

If it's empty you can try it, it may not even be connected to the battery at all, it will be a kind of trial and error. Do you have one of the car circuit tester screwdrivers with the earthing clip? If so you can check it with that and any other slot if that one is no good. You just need to find a switched live. Some people, have used the fuse for the rear wiper although I don't know what number that is. If you use the empty slot then keep the fuses to a low amperage, I used 2X 2.5a fuses.

I used a small bladed screw driver to remove both the plastic parts and a visual guide I found in the briskoda search under "hard wiring dash cam" took thirty minutes and I'm an old fart at these things...good luck.

jonro2009, I managed to remove the side panel using the trim removal tools that I purchased http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-Piece-Car-Door-Plastic-Trim-Panel-Dash-Installation-Removal-Pry-Tool-Kit-BLUE-/221976855293?hash=item33aeda02fd:g:IP8AAOSw5IJWe-H4 its very brittle plastic and the tools made it easier to come off. Did you secure the socket to the bare metal on the side panel.

Thanks for the info Thojj.

Edited by willie5094

I didn't secure the socket at all as it fits very snug behind the trim and does not rattle at all.

The plastic is brittle, the trim pullers are very handy. When feeding the power wire to the dashcam go up the furthest edge of the A pillar next to the windscreen otherwise it's tricky at the top when you go under the headlining. You don't need to remove the A pillar trim you should be able to just pull the edge away from the pillar and feed the wire in and down. I would start at the point you are putting the camera at go under the headliner by just pushing it underneath and then down the A pillar, that way the excess cable is easier to manage at the dash.
