Bay Parking Assist

Featured Replies

Gimmick or does it actually work?

I've used the parallel park a few times and works really well so today in a relatively quiet car park I thought I'd have a play with the bay version. It failed miserably. It could have had us in within a 3 point turn but didn't and just seemed to get completely confused. Instead of the third reversing manoeuvre actually getting us into the space, it steered the wrong way towards the car to the right hand side! And this point we gave up laughing at how rubbish it was!

Anyone had more success? Maybe it was just having a bad day lol! :D

I find park assist is so so. My parallel parking skills suck and consequently had a go at using park assist but found it doesn't really know where the kerb is so it can end up parking quite far from the kerb. Also I still haven't gotten the hang of getting it to engage properly. Maybe my dissatisfaction is down to not knowing how to use it properly - user error?

Bay parking was a little better for me, just the issue of how to get it to come alive in the first place.

That's really strange - mine always parks perfectly using the parallel function, and does really well at knowing where the kerb is!

Yeah not really had any issues with the parallel, and it will also drive itself back out of the space really well too, but first attempt at the bay park was laughable!

I don't really use mine but the occasions I've use it for parallel and bay to show passengers it's worked every time.

My Yeti works perfectly every time.

I do not use it in supermarket carparks  when going shopping  as it reverses you in.   I drive in nose 1st so I can easily load the boot without having to try & squeeze between 2 cars only to find i cannot access boot because of the car parked in the opposite bay.

The sensors don't take into account the kerb, they line themselves up with the cars you are parking in line with. If the parked vehicle is 2 foot from the kerb you will be too, if its parked up on the kerb then again you will be too.

+1 as stated in my VW manual which I suspect is also in the Skoda manual.

You tried it once and from that concluded it was rubbish.....

So if the idiot in the next space has kerbed his alloys it's ok for the car to scratch yours too? No thanks!

I must admit I haven't tried it myself but I've never really heard of anyone using it regularly so it's surely in gimmick territory?

I use it if I'm feeling lazy or bored, makes me smile just for the technology value. It is pretty clever. I also use it when I have friends in the car to see their reaction and my favourite time to use it is when the person in the next car is watching and it really freaks them out!

It is a gimmick though, somewhat de skills the driver if used all the time. If you can't park the car without it then perhaps you should either have a different car or stay off the road.

Bay parking yes, parallel no.  Theres a train of thought that says if it was so useless it couldn't do it first time (and I'd picked a bay that had more than usual room) then why even bother again.  Personally I can park better and quicker by myself but just wanted to play.

My Mondeo seems to work better than the yeti when bay parking. Although one thing I'm not keen on is when letting the PA do the job for you the car does not swing out to get in the space first time as a driver would, it directs the car backwards toward the angle of the furthest cars bumper and then pulls forward to get the angle right and then reverses again. I've never known it to do the job in more or less than 3 shunts. I've also noticed if the space is quite large, say 1.5 car widths then instead of putting the car right in the middle it will line it up with the near side of the vehicle to your right.

That was the first thing I noticed, like you say a normal driver would swing out but PA has to deal with the limitations in the way you have to drive past for it to measure, therefore it always has to start off from a more challenging position.  Not such an issue with parallel obviously.

I've only used it once for a bay and the car went into the space OK,the only problem was that I couldn't get out of the car!

but you would have known that before it finished parking. Well I would and would have moved on.

Tried bay parking twice and aborted part way through both times. Just seemed to be going too close to the parked cars. Reading this but may have sorted itself out eventually but it was too close for me to be comfortable with. I.e wing mirrors would have clashed close.

Parallel seems to work a treat!

Use mine frequently, no issues at all, perfect everytime.

I've used both the parallel and bay parking without any issues. Love the feature!
