Quattro - Haldex

Featured Replies

Just curious as to why Audi were at the front in terms of VAG with their 4x4 system, we all know as Quattro.

Why do VW use Haldex and not the Quattro system, is it exclusive to Audi.

I know not all 4x4 Audi's these days use the Quattro system, some have the Haldex.

If Quattro is that good and VAG own it why use a foreign system or do they own the manufacture that make Haldex.

Lots of questions :)

Quattro is a registered Audi trademark, not the specific system they use. They also use Haldex in some vehicles and they still brand them as Quattro

The Haldex system is cast here in the UK. Then shipped to Germany where they get machined and assembled. From what I can understand is still a family owned company.

And theres me thinking 'Quattro' 4x4 is Audi's name for Haldex. Like, 4Motion n VW

I just thought it was all the same system :D

So, it should really say 'Haldex' (think it's a bit tacky anyway - I'd opt out) -

^^^That was my take on it until I read somewhere that they are two different systems.

The true Audi system uses a Torsen system which is not the same as the Haldex.

Think it is based on the engine layout: on a transverse engine set up they employ the Haldex system and on the traditional longitudinal engine layout found in the big Audi's or RS versions they fit the Torsen "Quattro" system.

Makes sense now.

Audi are moving away form 'proper' Quattro to the Haldex system. :( Still, the fuel economy will improve slightly. The new A4 is dropping proper Quattro I believe (not sure about their performance versions though)  :( Auto express says that the V6 and V8 diesels will keep full time 4x4 and that most of the others will end up with the Haldex one.

They have managed to stick the Haldex on the longitudinal engines :(

Is it the 'quattro' that makes the powerful Audi models notoriously understeer?

I've heard of it being because the engine is so far over the front wheels, but is that because of the quattro?

If you can sort of understand what i mean by that probably very badly worded question :D

I wouldn't put money down on ANY VAG diesel;)

I added the Sports Diff to my A4 to help quell the understeer. It works reasonably well :)

I don't think that's the reason. Audi have been putting the engine up front for years, I've read before its so they can maximize the space for the interior etc.

The Audi Quattro's engine was so far forward there wasn't any room for the radiator.

The spare wheel in a MKIV Zodiac is mounted between the radiator and the engine!
