Rear Tyre Wear 225/40/18 23k miles normal?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I have a superb fl on a 64 plate and now that the millage is going up (private taxi hire) it's time for tyres!

From factory car was fitted with conti sport contact managed 18k out the front running 40psi in all 4 as I get the best tyre wear as there is lots of roundabouts in my town!

Just had to replace the rear as both were down to the tread studs & not much tread left! 23k miles on the rear axel only never been rotated seems pritty poor would normally expect double that millage! Am 99% sure the car is not 4x4 and I've had it since new pre reg demo with 2k on the clock!

I know it probably weighs a few ton but 23k on a set of tyres! This normal or am I best getting a four wheel alignment test done??

It's a superb elegance 170bhp fwd

What size tyres?

On my 2014 Superb II facelift poverty spec it has 205/55 16 tyres which are also Continentals - The originals were down to 6.5mm centre and 5mm on the edge at 23k miles

These are now in storage and I'm running on Continental TS850 2055/55 16 winters

Are the tyres worn evenly across the tread?

Tyre size was in the thread title 225/40/18

Rear tyres had a good even wear across the whole tyre!

I got just over 30K kms (19k miles) on my last two sets of 225/40/18s.  One set was conti sports and then a set of Michelins and I wasn't pushing the car too hard either.  Both sets rotated at 15k kms.   You're doing okay at 23k miles IMO.   Yes, you will get double that (and I often did) on smaller, higher profile tyres but not on 18" with 40 profiles.  For my third set I changed to 225/45/18 (on Barums) and after 20k kms there is a noticeable improvement in wear, not to mention comfort.  I reckon I will get to about 40k kms on these.

BTW running a 40 profile tyre at 40psi must make it a very uncomfortable ride??

You're lucky to reach 23k without the inner shoulders wearing down prematurely, or general sawtoothing across the whole tyre, leading to a godawful droning noise at the back. I've always suffered with these problems on the Mk2 Superb, irrespective of tyre make, pressure or suspension geometry.

The rear Conti Sport 2s on our L&K looked good at 26K miles when they were rotated to the front (new rubber was put on the back). I'm keeping an eye on them (now at 28K) and will probably get another 5-6K on the front before needing replacement.

These are the 225/40/18 size.

23k sounds poor to me. I've managed 49k (miles) on mine and they're still good. I'm not sure why you would have even 1% doubt that the car is a 4x4? Surely you know what you bought?

Have just replaced all my tyres with the same sport contis after just over 30k miles - well pleased. Hopefully the new set will outlast my ownership of my 62 plate estate.

I presume you have 16" wheels on your GL so there would be a massive difference in tyre wear.  I used to get that sort of mileage as well back when I had 15" and 16" wheels on Octavias but the wear rate gets progressively worse on 17" and 18" tyres.  BTW  I don't think the OP is doubting whether he has a 4x4 or not - he even states its a fwd.  He just mentioned a four wheel alignment.

If you read what he said again you'll spot it. He said he was 99% sure it wasn't a 4x4. That means it could still be! I'm amazed.

I did state if it was 4x4 but I was half joking!

As others have said I think it's just the price you pay for running 18" alloys this is the biggest alloy size I've had so never knew tyre wear was this bad!

You need the S , 16 inch 205 tyres , £55 each , quiet, comfy, 60 +mpg no problem and last practically forever. The added benefit you can hop up and down kerbs with gay abandon :-)

This is odd as I'm not sure what we're doing differently to get maybe 35K miles out of the same 225/40/18 conti sport 2 tyres. I reckon if I'd left them on the back we'd easily get 40K miles.

So very true Peter BUT the big alloys really set the car off ;)

I'm happy with fewer miles for added aesthetic appeal with the 18's

Yes they certainly add to the aesthetics alright. The wheel sizes are gradually getting bigger all the time especially over the past few years. Whereas 18" was the factory fit on L&Ks and elegance (in some markets anyway) the Superb III has 19" as factory fit on some higher end models. A few years ago 17s were considered large. I wonder where it will all end?!

16 don't look great but are ok and you can't see them when in the car! I had 18s on my old ST , never again , I seemed to be aways getting punctures and the tyres cost 160 each , it nearly creased me
