Puncture - Perfect Timing!!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just brought my new Son, Jake, home from Hospital today.

Had to be in Hospital for 8'0 clock in the morning last Thursday (c section), me and the missus all ready, go outside to the trusty steed to be greeted by...

Hmmm, thats stopped me in my tracks, how do I post a picture?

Anyway, to tell you orally I had a lovely shiny M6 Bolt stuck right through the sidewall of my tyre (how did it get there?..answers on a postcard)

Sudden panic stations as I am a one car family. Luckily my father-in-law was there as they were looking after the other kids(yes, you are right maybe I should have bought a MPV.......no you are WRONG!! dont take all my fun away!!) so we dragged him out of bed and we were only ten minutes late.

The next day I put on the spare (interestingly no skoda badge in the centre of the wheel?) took the car to a local tyre company and asked if they could repair it , as it had only done 4500 miles, they said they couldnt repair in the sidewall of the tyre but sent me to another company who could repair it (if they hadn't of told me I would of forked out

Keeno,

M6 Bolt...wonder where I dropped that. I had an m10 stud in one of mine a few months ago. Took me a good 3 miles to sense the tap tap tap tap was not my music..thankfully not flat and repaired...

How to post an image, firstly you need it on the internet, secondly use the image tag buttons from post editing/reply. If you need it hosting, email mea smallish one at [email protected] removing the .nospam and I'll pop in here for you.

Had a puncture on saturday also, not repairing cos it's nearly a slick anyway, picked up two new toyo's from some dodgy bloke in a pub last night,

I have always been under the impression that any puncture in (or near) the sidewall of a radial tyre means that the tyre must be scrapped. However, having read Keeno's post, and found the following site -

http://www.thistlethwaitestyres.co.uk/specser.htm

- it looks like I may be wrong.

That is really handy to know. I ALWAYS get at least one punture in a brand new car for some reason, it's always the sidewall and my local, friendly Charlie Browns can never repair it. The firm mentioned above are in Bolton, I'm in Sheffield, and tyres for a vRS cost how much?

My dealer charged me 110 quid inc vat for a conti 205 50 17 for my new alloy spare wheel (car came with a steelie spare). Funnily enough tho , i too had a puncture within 2 months of buying the RS , luckily it was fixable (6 quid at Kwik Fit!), more unluckily tho it seems to have only been partially sucessful because every time i do my tyre pressures (now have them all on 220 KPa) its the 'repaired' one which needs a top up of air!

Congratulations on your new arrival to you both,

I asume the puncture was in a front wheel as you didn't mention any problems in removing the wheel?

I had a look at a Focus RS (a friends thinking of buying one) yesterday, that has no spare wheel, just a bottle of tyre pucture repair foam! Nice wheels though, I dont think one of the 18"? wheels would fit in the well anyway.

The Fords converted to run on gas also lack a spare wheel. Instead there is a large toroidal (I think) gas tank where the spare wheel would normally be, a can of sealant, and an electric pump. Not the sort of kit to fix the type of punctures I seem to have suffered in recent years.

Yes I think thats the same in the Focus RS the dealer didn't know any thing about no spare  and there did seem to be some mention of a compressor on a label on the boot compartment.

John

That doesn't look like an accident!

No it definately wasn't done on purpose, no way could you pierce a tyre wall with a bolt only using your hands.

I reckon its been in the gutter and as I have pulled up to park it has been jammed between the kerb and tyre and as the cars gone forward the bolt has started to go perpendicular to the kerb and unfortunately the tyre has gave way before the kerbstone!!

Went to pick the tyre up on Tuesday and they told me the company they sent it to told them they couldn't repair it, so the garage said they "pleaded" with them to try as it had done so few miles, so they said they would have a go and I have to go back on Friday. I will let you know how I get on.

Picked tyre up on Friday, cost me

Erm... what sort of tyres do you have?

My Contis have "outside" written on the outside of them which I take to mean they should only go on the rim one way?

Good point, never thought of checking, I just assumed that my expert 18yr old tyre fitter would know.

My tyres are Dunlop Sport, I will check them later. (no "worried" emoticon!)

As a point of interest did you have to sign a disclaimer regarding the performance of the repaired tyre ?

Baaheed, No I didn't.

I checked my tyre earlier on and it does say on the tyre wall which way round the tyre should be, so I will be paying a visit back to Ye Olde Tyre Shop and asking them to please put it on correctly!!
