airbag light after body repair.

Featured Replies

hi,

got my car back yesterday after relatively minor body repair to n/side doors.they delivered it back while i was out but pointed out to my wife the airbag light is on. it wasnt when it went in! theyre saying theyve read it as a fault from the drivers side air bag sensors, and they noticed it when they took the car from where i parked it, to start repairs. im saying its happened in their care and somethings happened to trigger this, most likely when theyve disconnected the battery. theyve agreed for me to go back monday morning to try to get rid of the light, but have tried to say its not there fault. any thoughts or answers out there???

                                                                                                                    thanks,

                                                                                                                               steve

Disconnecting the battery shouldn't cause an airbag warning unless a crash sensor or airbag was not connected when the battery was put back on. Then it would need clearing with vcds or the likes.

Should be able to clear it, i have just done an audi a3 with a foxwell scanner.

the actual code reading said "side airbag crash sensor drivers side g179 open circuit/short circuit to B+" the only other thing i can think of is that they moved the seats positions, ive heard sometimes that can cause an error if the wirings been in one place for a long time.

I think the sensor is in the door, not the seat. Also be very very careful clearing airbag faults. Short to positive faults can cause an airbag to deploy if the fault is still present when you try to clear it.

clutching at straws here a bit, but when it says drivers side door, is that definately right hand drive uk, (o/side)? as its the nearside doors that have been dismantled.

Vcds reports left or right rather than driver/passenger side, but I'm not sure about other readers. It could be the left hand side.

right, i"ll be interested to see what diagnostics kit they use. i do have a friend from on here who has vcds so i may tap him up if they cant/ wont sort this. i just get the feeling theyre out of their depth a bit here.

Actually thinking about it, vcds does report left and right for things except for the front doors, which it calls drivers and passenger.  Given that the door controllers are different the car knows which is which.

BUT if the scanner that has been used is a simple OBDII one, it might have it mixed up.

As it's g179 try looking at the wiring as it goes though to the door, I've have the cabling replaced there. Twice....

They haven't plugged the crash sensor back in after removing the door carrier.

very interesting comments here, particularly the last, which is quite possible to have happened.when i checked my car, all my interior kit was all over the place, and when mentioned they agreed it had been a rush to get the car out to me....

Wires

It happened to me

It's a wire broken near plug on body.

Mine was a yellow wire.

im thinking so too now. the bodyshop say the airbag light was lit as soon as they moved the car, 2 hours after i parked it without the airbag light on.we went through the diagnostics again and theyre positive they didnt do anything with the sensors. all work was done from outside.

so i took it to my regular lads, exactly same diagnosis on lap top. couldnt see anything obvious, but they think the link would be adjusting the seat, (it was well out of my settings), to move the car into the workshop, hence the body shop version of events. its going in to them on thursday. fingers crossed its a connection!

The crash sensor has nothing to do with the seat though.

theyre thinking of a pinched wire or disturbed connection to the sensor as a possibility. im not sure of the wiring to the sensor or where its located.  i know bugger all about how things are wired in, so all input is gratefully recieved. the bodyshop had also  printed off a audi/vw forum article that shows the crash sensor located at the b pillar base encased in foam ans susceptible to damp and corrosion issues. i guess they will go there next then?

The drivers crash sensor is located inside the drivers door on the back of the ancillaries carrier.

sorted! sensor turned out to be fine, a wiring continuity check found a complete break in the wiring between the door and a post.

thanks everbody for your input and help.(i still cant believe the co-incidence of it failing though!!)
