Realistic aspirations for a Mk1 Octavia VRS Estate?

Featured Replies

We need an estate car and, due to a small inheritance, will be in a position to buy one in the coming weeks (maybe a couple of months)

Having spent countless hours pondering all sorts (mainly Vauxhall and Saab, we've been die-hard Vauxhall owners for about the last 20 years) we decided that what we'd really like is a Mk1 Octavia VRS.

The budget will be £2k with no real room to increase it.

Is this a realistic budget to get a decent example of this car?

I've got the buyers guide ready to rock and roll for when the time comes, and between us we have a fair number of years of buying used cars (in every condition from good, through bad and well into downright ugly).

But we've never had a petrol turbo one.

I would imagine these days you should be able to get a fairly decent example of a mk1 for that budget yeah.

pop into the mk1 model section and you'll get an idea on issues to lok out for - mostly dodgy doorlocks or water ingress these days :D

Thanks

I've been browsing all the relevant (and a couple of not so relevant) sections for a few days and there's SO much info it's all got a bit mind boggling.

Seems there's always a few out there and I'm hoping there will be the right one when I got the cash in my hand..

I'm a bit of a list maker so there will be a wordpad doc on the laptop soon with a must-do list very soon - it drives the missus mental.  :giggle:

Gah!!.. Looks like I'm about 10 weeks from having any money

Guess I'll lurk and learn until then.. at which point I'm pretty certain there will be no decent cars to be had

You won't have a problem, lots of nice examples about for that sort of money, lots of dogs too so be wary.

Buy on condition and history not mileage and £2k should be plenty for a Mk1. Avoid anything with too many mods or in the real bargain basement, and if you want the estate be particularly sensitive to bootlid rust.

The buying guide here is actually really good.

General guide imho... sub £1k for high miles/badly modified/no history/tatty. Around the £1,500 mark for average miles, reasonable to good nick and not too many mods. £2,000 should get you a solid clean car - they can go for £3,500+ for a really mint one.

The Mk1  VRS still is to this day one of my favourite cars I have owned, they suit the 1.8T engine down to the ground, in so much I would have another one.

Agreed with the above look for a standard one that hasn't been played with and you will find an extremely nice car

Cheers..

Only mods I would consider buying into would be exhaust and wheels but I am more interested in a standard one.

I have the buyers guide from here ready to go, just keeping my fingers crossed there's a little beauty waiting for me in a couple of months.

Always seems to be a few on auto trader, Gumtree and eBay.
