Is the 2.0 Fabia quicker than the Fabia vRS ?

Featured Replies

the old 2.0 has always been VAGs dodgy engine

And yet, they've kept using it in one guise or another for 20+ years... :rubchin:

Back on topic for a minute:

The 2.0L produces 115 bhp at 5400 rpm and therefore 111 lbft of torque at 5400rpm

The vRS produces 130 bhp at 4000 rpm and therefore 170 lbft of torque at 4000rpm

The 2.0L produces a peak torque of 125lbft at 2400rpm (and therefore 57 bhp at torque peak)

The vRS produces a peak torque of 229 lbft at 1900rpm and (therefore 82 bhp at peak torque).

Now assessing peak power first:

VRS produces its peak power at 4000 rpm and the 2.0L at 5400 rpm. So 5400/4000= 1.35. This is the factor we need to correct the engines output to account for the lower gearing of the petrol at any given speed assuming that the car speeds are similar. Next we need to further increase the factor to allow for weight difference, so 1315/1200=1.095. 1.095 x 1.35=1.478.

So we need to positively compensate the 2.0 power figures by 1.478 to determine a ballpark "how much shove" difference at any given road speed at peak power.

2.0L= 111 lbft (at 5400rpm) x 1.478= 164 arbitary units acceleration at peak power.

Vrs = 170 lbft (at 4000rpm) x 1 = 170 arbitary units of acceleration at peak power.

So at peak power, the 2.0L is accelerating approximately 3.5% less quickly than the vRS assuming speed to be similar by control of the gear the car is being driven in.

Looking in the midrange, we see the 2.0 produces its peak torque at 2400 rpm and the vRS at 1900 rpm, so again, compensating for gearing difference at any given speed, we positively compensate the 2.0 by 2400/1900 = 1.26. Multiply this by 1.095 to allow for weight difference gives us 1.38.

2.0L = 125 lbft x 1.38 = 172 arbitary units of acceleration at peak torque.

vRS = 229 lbft x 1 = 229 arbitary units of acceleration at peak torque.

So in the midrange the 2.0L is accelerating 26% less than the vRS (or 33% more as seen from the 2.0)

Now neither engine can run at peak power or torque continually so gearing comes into it. The Fabia vRS has 6 speeds, so you can keep it in the zone more of the time. Also, and more importantly, as the engines approach peak power, the vRS is coming down off a big torque peak, the 2.0 is not, so just below peak power, say from 2500 - 4000 in the vRS and from 3900 - 5400 in the 2.0L there is a decreasing difference in the power available, the area under the respective curves favouring the diesel.

These are strictly ballpark figures, but would suggest that in a drag race, the vRS would indeed spank the 2.0L by quite a margin. I would guesstimate around 10% advantage to the vRS on average. This is roughly what I experienced in my little chase with a 2.0. Every time he changed gear, he was off the pace, when I changed up, I was catching up. At no point in proceedings was he ever getting away or even matching pace.

More importantly for road use, the 2.0 driver will be caning the nuts off it to keep up with a vRS driver running 2500 to 3500 rpm.

Great post Chris!

Uh huh...just leave it to the track dude. Nice post mind you, but it don't seem real enough to me.

Whatever...Leon, enjoy your new car :)

And yet' date=' they've kept using it in one guise or another for 20+ years... :rubchin:

don't get me wrong to be using it for 20 odd years oviously shows alot about the engine.... must be good  or cheap to produce  .

Dad has had golf mkiv, octy ambiente and passat all with the 2.0 and he said it was bloody awful foot to the floor and all u'd get a load of noise but no true power.

Its just a heavy old lump expecially when you think a 1.4 100bhp can very very easily be tuned up to the 115/118bhp the 2.0 will be giving out. Reakon its just on the range to fill a gap in market basically for people who want to say 'oh look iv got a big 2.0' no power though...... may as well be like me.... i have a 1.2!!! That explains why i have NO power :D .

My speedo isn't off' date=' it's pretty accurate, seeing as I know where each and every radar is in this country, having been here for 23 years, and so know at which speeds it will flash and whatnot. Don't question me there.

[b']

Glad to see you know where each and every speed camera/radar is in this country, you must market and sell that database of knowledge. Having lived here for nye on 40 yers, even I don't know them all myself, and even the local one's change week to week whether they actually trigger or not so you obviously are from a greatly more intelligent planet than I.

Getting back on track....who give's a monkees which is faster.

Got anything to back that up. That's like me saying my Mondeo would spank your Fabia :P:rofl:

Chris

Lets be honest Chris the Fabia would spank your Modeo because it's the fastest car in the world and can 'have' anything.

Including fish and chips?;)

Chris - that has to be the most thought out post I've ever read on here.

Excellent.

Including fish and chips?;)

Yes - including fish and chips and 'Jayne' this months Penthouse centrefold.

Yes - including 'Jayne' this months Penthouse centrefold.

So do you need to be a ***** to have one then?:D

Nice post Chris - although my head hurts a bit :P

Kentish - MIL lives in Dubai, which I imagine has slightly fewer speed cameras than England given that most of its desert and I can't imagine speeding camels are a problem :D

Sounds like you have a problem with my statement there. Do you?

England is huge compared to the UAE, and Dubai and most of the cities are along the coast of the country, whereby the rest is mainly desert.

So I'll put it like this to you seeing as you think age and race has alot to do with what makes a person's statements valid....

Don't question me there old man.

here we go again

here we go again

Fun isn't it? :)

why did they stick it in a gti then???! i dont get it! :(

They didn't really. They specced one up to GTi trim levels and added the badge - it was never the GTi in any other country (and wasn't really in this country). Kind of like what Vauxhall do with SRi these days.

Edit: What I mean is that there was also a 'proper' GTi alongside it. Not that it wasn't in one.

I assume we're talking about the MK4 Golf GTi 2.0 here? A colleague has one and wishes he'd gone for the 1.8T.

Sounds like you have a problem with my statement there. Do you?

HO HO..

Perhaps you should borrow some glasses, you seem to need them.

I fail to see any reference to race in my post, (so the glasses are needed then), so why bring it into the debate?

Anyway..............whatever..............pal.

Why did this have to descend into a slanging match? Its pretty pathetic...

I couldnt care less which is faster as my Furby is plenty fast enough for my limited capability...

If I fancy some fun I will 'have a go' at anything... Most of the time I get ra*ed because I like seeing what proper fast cars can do.

Then the eternal 2.0 vs vRS pales into insignificance due to about a 1 second difference eitherway 0-60...

ps Furbis rule :D

Now lets all hug and be merry for it is Christmas time...

Christmas time, mistletoe and wine, Furbies racing off the white line.

Thats beautiful...

Brought a tear to my eye...

Their cogs are on fire, its all that torrrrrrque you see.

And all this goes oooooon with great MPG.

:rofl

As has been seen over the last fews day in a couple of threads including the 2.0l Fabia you have...again... exhibited a lack of self restraint and over exhuberance.

You have also resorted to personally abusing people....again.

You can express your opinions, we welcome it....but you rise to the bait too easily and resort to offensive remarks.

If you want to PM me or any of the other Mods/Staff to discuss feel free.

But yet...again... I am forced to close a thread.

Seems I have used "again" rather a lot.

p.s please reframe from discussing the 20.l Fabia....you know Mil will only get peed off.
