Why was the 'elegance' name dropped?

Featured Replies

Curious to know as mine is an elegance spec

Probably to bring it in line with the new Fabia, Yeti and Superb models: S, SE, SE-L, Laurin & Klement. No doubt subsequent models will follow this naming system from now on.

It wasn't dropped here in Estonia or Latvia. They've renamed it Style elsewhere else than UK.

Same in Norway. Its Ambition and Style here.

Different countries, different languages, different names........

We've used letters for different trim levels in the UK for decades: S, SE, L, LX, GL, GLX, GLE, GLT, GT, GTi, CD, CDX etc etc.

Maybe the shift back to letters is an Anglo-centric thing. I remember Skoda used L, LX and GLX for model names in the UK about 18 years ago.

Is the SE-L debadged as was the elegance?

There's already too many badges on the back, so no space for "Elegance" or "SEL" for that matter. Don't get why they feel it necessary to spell out "Skoda" and "Octavia" when the Skoda Emblem is just fine on its own! Had them all removed on mine except the emblem, even removed the "TDI"

Australia uses "Ambition" and "Style" too. Last I checked we use the same language (mostly). :)

There are many different factors, though. For instance, the vRS model is just "RS" here. I read this is because of a dispute in the UK with Ford over the "RS" moniker.

The Buick Lacrosse was ridiculed in Canada because the name is French-Canadian slang for "pleasuring oneself".

Some markets use alphanumeric naming to try and make customers identify with a brand rather than a model or trim.

Pretty sure we're different countries though  :p

Maybe Skoda thinks us Brits are just THAT special, we need our own exclusive badging...... :giggle:

That's the funny thing about all of this. There aren't any model badges on the car, with the exception of the 'Laurin & Klement' badge on the front wings for the top model.

Obviously the vRS badging goes without saying.

Super special. You guys do get a lot more choice in your Skodas than we do.

I remember reading an article years ago about Honda They were going to name one of their models Honda Fitte or Fitta (something along those lines) until they discovered it was Norwegian for (Lady Garden) if you know what i mean.

On the scheme of naming things Skoda seems to have country specific models too. There's an Octavia Swiss Edition and a Swiss Joy for the CH market. There's an Octavia Fresh in CZ. Hungary has a Clever spec along with a Joy as well and Germany has the JOY and Solution lines.

The JOY lines appear to be a combination of the top selling features in each market as they're different depending on where you go for.

I don't think joy and skoda should be in the same sentence :-D

Skoda have never managed to stick to a consistent naming scheme in the UK.

For a while the Fabia and Superb did Classic, Comfort and Elegance, but the Octavia used Ambiente for the mid level trim.
Then they went to a mixture of letters for the lower levels and Elegance for the higher which seems a bit silly.
Now they've finally gone to letters across the board it makes more sense.

As an aside, I don't have any preferences for letters or names but if you are going to do names for trim levels it should at least be obvious where they fit in the range relative to each other.

With some manufacturers there's no obvious pattern so you can't be sure if you're looking a top or bottom spec car. The French and Ford can be particularly bad here.

Croatia got name change also.
