OSR caliper binding.

Featured Replies

Had an advisory for a 'slight bind' on the drivers side rear caliper on my MOT.

From what I can see, when the handbrake is released, it is not fully returning.

I already have the springs fitted.

Is there anything else that can be done to sort this apart from a new caliper?

Try cleaning both sides up, removing callipers and pads and re-zeroing the pistons, check now that you have fitted external return springs that the handbrake cable has a slight bit of slack in it.

Edit:- once a car is over maybe 3 years old, I'd clean up all the brakes every year.

I had been through this time and time again with the wife's car

Fitted the springs like you say and worked for a while, used to regular strip them down ( not calliper ) and clean up but it would just start again.

Last year the car started to judder when braking and one of the back discs had been running hot, so I bit the bullet and replaced all the discs and pads, also got 2 new rear TRW Calipers. Changed the lot and bled the brakes a lot to flush new fluid through the system even done the fronts

It's fixed the problem but the main thing i noticed is how much better the brake pedal feels

In the exact same position as you had release springs fitted. Mine was binding squeaking and squealing. Found out seal was leaking so have opted for a refurbished caliper off robbie drake from facebook. So hopfully it'll fix the problem.

How much was that if you don't mind me asking? Found a new one online for about £65

Vwspares.co.uk I got mine from

TRW BHN275 & 276, they are brand new, not recon and you don't have to return them. The numbers given are not for green painted but just plain, can't find the price I paid but think they've gone up slightly in price. About the price you mention so maybe same place.

When I said the brakes feel a lot better I mean not as much pedal travel, thinking with the rear Calipers not returning you pushing the fluid before the Calipers starts to brake

I bought my front set off him last year so I know him from before & so he gave me a good deal to help me out. Was gonna go for a full rear setup off but went with the cheapest option...for now.lol

My leaking seized caliper + £50 for a fully refurbed in Vrs green.

Good bloke he is.
