Simple Oil Change/Capacity Question

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm considering doing oil & filter changes myself now, but to check if it's worth investing in all the tools I've asked a few local garages for prices. £70-80 seems reasonable but one mentioned my car (1.2 Fabia Estate) only takes 2.8ltr ... does that seem right? If so, I'm sure I'm going to get charged for 4ltrs, so I might as well buy it myself and use the rest for topping up.

Lastly, should I go Castrol EDGE 5W-30 or 5W-30 LL?

Thanks

A Main Dealer charges for the 2.8, or 3.2, 3.6, 3.9 or 4.3 Litres required if that is the Quantity Required.

Is your car a 1.2 TSI 4 Cylinder ?

(or a 1.2 TDI 3 Cylinder.?)

I would not get Castrol Edge

& probably a main Dealer will not use Castrol Edge, but Quantum Long Life III.

If doing it yourself you can buy 4 or 5 Litres of the Correct Oil in Asda for less than 2 Litres charged from a Skoda Dealership.

If you are servicing (Oil & Filter Change every year Under 10,000 miles)

you can use the Correct Semi Synthetic Oil & no need to use Long Life oil for Variable Servicing.

................

1.2 petrol 2.8 litres VW 503 00 / VW504 00

Variable Servicing

5w 30 Full Synthetic Long Life

Fixed Servicing.

5w 40 Full Synthetic ( VW501.1  / VW 502 00  2.8 litres.

I would put the Quantum long life in it for what it costs, its around £20 off ebay for 5 litres

Thanks.

My Fabia is neither TSI or TDI, just a standard 1.2, but hasn't had an oil change for a 'while'.

Out of interest, why not Castrol?

?

So is that a standard petrol or diesel 1.2 ?

Use Castrol if you want to pay more than is necessary.

Just because they big up their self and the VW Group recommend Castrol it does not make it particularly better than other brands

of the same spec and half the price.  JMO obviously.

Right.

Sorry, it's petrol.

Thanks.

Quantum is what most main dealers use, and it is re-branded Castrol oil

Ah, thanks for that.

Quantum is what most main dealers use, and it is re-branded Castrol oil

I reckon the true brand of what is resold as Quantum will be up to which oil company provided the best bid to supply when the current tenders went out.

yea your probably right, to me it doesn't matter as long as it meets the spec. The only reason I won't buy an oil is if it comes in a 4L bottle, not unless I buy a car that needs a lot more than 4.5 litres

DIY

1. Oil £20

2. Filter £5

3. Filter Tool £5

*Rebranded Fuchs oil :)
