Mk4 Golf seat base swapping question

Featured Replies

My back's been hurting and I don't think my bog standard 2001 Mpi seat helps much, in fact I think it might be the cause!

I can get some Mk4 golf non recaro but sporty looking leather seats. I get the idea on what you need to do, but have two questions if anyone can help.

1. I gather you use the Fabia's metal seat frame and fit the golf seat base/pad to it. Are all Fabia metal seat bases compatiable to accept the golf pad/seat? It doesn't have to be a Fabia sports seat or anything in the first place?

2. Leading on from that, I haven't been able to see how the old Fabia seat base removes from its metal base/frame. Are the fixings for the old base and new golf base the same? Another four torx or spline bits, something like that...?

Just want to feel clear on it before delving in..

Thanks

1. No. Its just a seat base, should be fine. Foam just sits back on the metal frame. Maybe slightly different, but I dont really think so/much.

2. Yes, from what I recall they should pretty much just line up identically. At least the top part of the recaro seat and the bottom base must have been on mine at least.

If your a practical sort, can handle nuts and bolts and upholstery should be easy enough

Thanks, hoping it'll be easy enough but just can quite get my head around the seat base swap, including the plastic trim around seat too (does the golf plastic trim swap over with the golf pad/leather?). Surely there shouldn't be any need to do much with the upholstery itself if just swapping over the pad/leather on to the fabia frame?

I mean just pulling stuff apart, having to pull hog clips off etc. The fronts don't really need any upholstery consideration.

If anything the worse issue is the rears aren't an exact match in fact and you should be prepared for some jiggery pokery, in relation to non-lining up of the headrests, messing about with hog clips etc.

so yes there is ideally some consideration to upholstery - not a lot though and not unsurmountable.

You will see if you take it on, shouldn't be much challenge if you are a fairly practically headed sort.

There is a pretty good breakdown by Pulse on here, just search for it and will illustrate the rears issue and pretty much how to do the lot.

Yes, thanks for replying again. I imagine i'll manage but ideally with feeling fairly sure whats involved.

Can get the back seats too, but not fussed about fitting them. Seats always folded down in my estate, not 'cause it's such a passion wagon :)

It's quite straight forward

I put Leon cupra fronts in mine and you don't even had to take the cover off, just take all the plastic surrounds off and the covers just unclip with the foam attached, swap it to the fabia base and clip it all back on,

And the back of the seat litterally just bolts on to the fabia base

Well that sounds nice and simple, Think i'll try that myself i suppose!
