That’s my point.

My cars have an average of 6 adjustments on each side of the steering wheel, which I use by feel without needing to look at a screen. 

Im not sure I want to learn how to get the air adjustment right when conditions constantly change.

i still hanker for a model 3 however.......at this time.

  • With 22 pages of thread to read through, I must confess I haven’t bothered BUT have actually now had a test drive of a Model 3 and thought I’d share the impressions here.   As a background,

There are numerous things that are more difficult to do whilst driving with a touch screen. 

A mobile is the classic example as you can text with buttons without looking, this is almost impossible to do on a touch screen. 

I agree temperature will be difficult with virtual buttons. But even with physical buttons, I still kept hitting the wrong button on my Leaf, because there are 4 sets of up/down buttons all feel alike. The Skoda dial method is preferred. I think E-Tron uses a sliding scale rather than virtual buttons. Being Tesla, it's possible in future firmware updates.

 

Heated screen/mirror/seats are virtual buttons. Model 3 has them always available along the bottom. But yes, harder to hit while driving.

 

Hazard warning light physical button is compulsory. It is near the rear view mirror in Model 3.

 

Fog lights might be a few swipe away. This is more difficult than it needs to be: a stalk rotating switch.

 

The phone touch screen argument could also work for touchscreen. My wife never works Leaf climate system correctly, she'd press heater for heat and AC when it's too hot. Doesn't understand the purpose of Auto button. With a touch screen, when you have everything on Auto, only make temperature adjustment visible. So the end user will only need to change one main setting. If they know what they are doing, they can change other settings with one additional virtual button press. I see simplification like this good for non-techy non-car persons.

I agree the Leaf heater controls are pretty crappy!

Even the auto journalists know it’s the future rather than a trend......in the same way oil replaced coal and now the ‘smartphone’ is replacing the ICE.

 

We get the standard range ‘base’ model for delivery as early as September for your ~ £40k on road.

Lifetime updates/improvements.

EV specific design without compromises of ICE variations.

Best batteries and seemingly always ahead in tech.

Best charging infrastructure for both speed and coverage.

Am I a ‘fan boy’ now?.

The model Y is claimed to have vastly more storage space than the 3 .......not sure how that happens.

Got to agree with that. I'm impressed with what I see online. I understand there may be some quality issues still, but I'm sure this will only get better. Model Y is the only vehicle in the stable that may suit my needs and is anywhere near my budget. I'll be looking into this as I have extended my lease on the Karoq to wait to see what the ID, Vision IV, 2008 etc etc are like before taking the plunge (or not).

That is indeed my view, for Tesla and specifically for Model 3.

 

I feel Tesla USP is the charging infrastructure. I can drive all across Europe without worrying about the mess that is public charging. I can roll up to supercharger station, there will be more than a few charger at each station, they are well looked after and have better reliability than other motorway service chargers (the shockingly bad Ecotricty EH in UK), they all just works, no membership or app complications.

 

I dislike SUV with a passion. If only the Model 3 has hatchback opening then it would be my absolutely perfect car. It's low down, its driving position is sporty, it drives really well, its got good armrest and good interior storage, rear seats works well for children. I'd happily buy the base white SR+ right now if my Skoda is on its last legs and I need to change our long range car.

 

With my 6 year old Skoda, I'll drive it for 2-3 more years and change it before timing belt + DSG oil are due again. I'll run the car on a budget (only necessary work) and hope I can get a second hand Model 3 for £25k by then......... or a new Model Y if wife twists my arms due to 3 not a hatchback. I can't see the long range family car being any other EV.

Agreed and by going with a CCS port on the Model 3 and Model Y they have opened up the whole of the non-TESLA European charging network now. On a recent tour of Scotland it was clear that it was easily do-able in an EV with 200+ mile range, TESLA excepted due to the propriety charge port - that limitation is now gone.

TESLA's superchargers are now upgraded to have both types of connector.

Has anyone leased a Model 3 on here?

I wouldn’t think there was enough supply for a leasing company.  Those who have been on the waiting list for around two years wouldn’t be impressed.  Without wanting to sound like the dreaded ‘fan boy’ I think Elon personally values his customers.

You buy online from him rather than numerous disinterested intermediaries.

Well I have heard of folks on a lease from LeasePlan, so I wondered if anyone had taken advantage. Buying from Tesla direct or a subscription from EVezy is pricey compared with leases from more mainstream companies. I'm was just looking to see if anyone has direct experience. (although if they have, they probably left the Skoda forum ;))

Yes, currently it is a few hundred pounds above the luxury tax band :(

 

I think it's a demand leaver. When initial wave of orders have died down, they'll lower the price slightly to have cheaper paint options (eg. not the multicoat red) below the threshold. They'll then fill the boats with largely similar cars.
