2.0 Manual SE Business, nearly 500 miles, first impressions

Featured Replies

Picked up my quartz grey on a personal lease only last week and fair to say I’m very very impressed, first time Skoda user for me too. I added power tailgate, sunroof, towbar, reversing camera and Canton sounds. Still finding my way round things but my early impressions are, this is a quality made machine which is outstanding value for money.

I know I'm preaching to the converted but here are my thoughts.

Major likes…

Finish and quality - I’m a bit picky but I can’t fault this one. Nice quality materials all round with plenty of soft touch, quality controls and no squeaks or rattles. The glovebox lid didn’t seem to fit right until I realised it had the handbook and other delivery stuff wedged in. The driver who delivered it runs a Merc E class and from other quality cars he has delivered he was impressed. Nice extras like footwell lighting, puddle lights, electric leather/alcantara seats, and power tailgate give it a luxury feel. I know other people have said it before but seriously if you de-badged the car inside and out you would think you were in a quality German car.

Engine, gearbox and ride - The 3 in combination provide a really good experience. A nice smooth quiet torquey engine with plenty of mid-range punch, a gearbox which just seems to spring into place and the ride on a good surface is sublime. Potholes (plenty of those where I live) just a distant rumble. If you are like me and don’t push the limits of the car it’s impressive.

Economy - When it was delivered it showed the average mpg as 54. My driving is a 5 mile commute on country lanes with the engine only just getting warm. Weekends are a mixed bag but even after all that it’s still showing around 50 mpg since last refuel, and late 50’s on the odd longer run, things can only get better. I’m running it in eco mode and I can feel it coasting at times with the constant mpg indicator up in the 100+ or off the scale.

Canton - Loaded up a 32gb SD card with my favourite test FLAC playlist, tweaked the settings a bit and now it’s just settling in. For overall sound I would give it 8.5 which in my books is very good. A very open, airy and detailed sound with plenty of punchy bass when you need it. It has the ability to be loud when you want it but without sounding loud, just bigger. My daughter loves it with her tablet in the holder and the sounds through the car with Bluetooth, she said it’s like being at the cinema. Incidentally nothing like a film soundtrack to test your subwoofer. £600 in the brochure but money well spent in my opinion.

Stop start, ACC, drive mode, acres of space, all brilliant, I could go on but you get the picture.

Very very slight dislikes….

Zeus alloys - I added a few extras and had spent enough, but the wheels….well just a tad boring.

Halogens - Xenons and daytime LED’s would have been nice but couldn’t justify the extra cost, having said that the halogens are more than adequate. Cornering fog lights are great for country roads.

Road noise - Overall very hushed but just a little susceptible to different road surfaces, maybe a change of tyre when the time comes will sort this out.

Amundsen infotainment – Again couldn’t justify the Columbus when the useful functionality is almost identical. Just a bigger screen would have been nice. But in terms of operation, response and versatility it’s good and coupled with the Canton even better. Nice to see full postcode on the satnav available too this isn’t always the case on fitted systems.

So overall I’m one very impressed Skoda driver

Petrol or Diesel?

Should have mentioned it's a diesel, but I think all SE Business models are diesel.

Ah...thank you.

Nice review

With it being diesel, you really need to give the car a blast at weekends if your only doing 5 mile trips and engine not even warm.

Enjoy the car... sounds lovely :)

I'll see if I can upload some photos and it's a hatch. I did order the optional rear wiper but afterwards thought it spoiled the lines slightly. As it is it turned up without it so I wasn't too fussed, with the rear view camera I haven't found it a problem at all.

Get my 150 DSG L&K tomorrow will do a report and compare it to my 140 DSG Elegance 4x4, well that's my plan.
