Diesel drivers should pay up to £800 more VED

Featured Replies

I think the update on this is that only new cars will be taxed £800 which to me defeats the object for surely newer cars would have lower emissions than an older car. Not that this has any thing to do with pollution but more probably another stealth wealth tax.

  • The people in this Think Tank are just trying to justify their existance.A good excuse to raise taxes for this government. I also thought that people are living longer, so if diesel is really  killing

  • More CO2  for less NOx, worsening a global problem for the benefit of those who choose to live or work in big cities. About as fair as MPs/bankers/board-butterflies giving themselves big pay deals in

  • They should do away with VED and add it to the fuel price. As for diesel harmful bla bla bla I don't care, I'll still drive diesels as the perform much better mid range. If they want to save the plane

I'd think it would be perceived as far more evil to change the taxation drastically on something already bought; rather than something yet to be chosen? Much more voter-friendly to 'steer' people by adding cost to a choice not yet made, rather than moving the goalposts on people who have already made their choice?

The idea is put another £800 on the price of a new diesel on top of the extra cost of the new emission systems and it will move people onto cheaper Petrol, Hybrid, electric etc. And thus reduce the number of diesels producing NOX.

Am I to presume the power station which supplied the electricity for cars produces no NOX?

For 78% of UK output no NOx.

For the other 22% yes but restricted output and closely monitored. Ratcliffe On Soar is also the first UK coal station with SCR that will remove 99.9% NOx at a cost of £300 Million.

But NOx is a local issue not a global issue so the issue is mainly at source. And thus the main issue is whithin city centres were there are large numbers of diesel engines.
