Oil Change - sensor or time/kms

Featured Replies

Probably covered elsewhere so apologies folks but I've had the oil change in 6k or 27 days alert appear. Is this based entirely on time/kms and therefore the dealer's muffed up the service interval OR is there a sensor telling me the quality of the oil is poor and therefore needs changing?

Appreciate your help

According to the dealer I got mine from, there's a sensor that monitors quality too.

Hey guys, thanks for your replies. Is a bit weird but the dealer says that as the alert appeared at 11500km not 10000km then it's likely the oil needs changing due to driving factors such as the number of hot and cold starts, how much it's been hammered, short v long journeys etc. If the alert appeared at 10k this would fit with one of the service intervals. Not quite sure I agree to be honest and they've agreed to check how the service schedule was set up.

Back to whether there is an oil viscosity sensor that alerts to indicate poor oil quality, I'm confident this is not the reason the alert has come up - without telling the dealer, I've actually given her 3 oil changes the latest being xmas and it still looks brand new.

To be continued...

Usually the idea of an oïl quality sensor is to let you run longer without a service rather than shorten the servicing life.

So 15,000km/1-years should be the minimum up to 30k/2-years for the maximum.

What is your current mileage + 6k ?

As Tom said, there are 2 choices for servicing (sometimes configured by the dealer to maximise their profit)

   - Fixed Servicing (15k km or 1-year)

   - Variable Servicing (upto 30k km or 2-years)

After the first servicing there will be an "inspection" warning every 1-year regardless of mileage.

I would guess your car has been configured for "Fixed Service" so you are either coming up to the 1-year point or you are close to the 15k km (or both).
