Weird Tickover Problem

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, i have a weird tickover problem with my partners VRS, When i initially start the car it will tickover at 850rpm then within a few seconds it will increase to just short of 1000rpm (987 to be precise). This seems quite high as it always ticked over at 850 rpm, but also my partner has complained that the fuel consumption has increased when this problem started. Then it is reasonably random whether it ticks over normally or fast, there is no loss of power I have done various things to rectify the problem but have run out of ideas. I have done the following:-

New temperature sensor - No change.

Cleaned EGR - was not too clogged to tell you truth, but no difference.

Scanned with VCDS - No faults,

Checked MAF using VCDS - appears healthy.

Checked throttle position, stays at 0% on tickover.

Turning A/C on or off makes no difference.

Has anyone else had the same problem, i have searched but cant find any other threads with the same symptoms. Thanks in advance James

Mine used to do this when my alternator (load sensing wire) had snappped, its a very common fault, although might not fix yours.... seems your running out of options though!

Just been researching the load wire issue after you suggested it, funnily enough i don't get the battery symbol illuminate when the ignition is on, so maybe thats the problem. If i get some time over the weekend i will have a look and let you know. Cheers

No problem :)

How old is your spark plugs?

Have you checked the PCV-system. **** in the valve? Bad oil?

Its a diesel so no spark plugs im afraid, im fairly confident the problem is his load sensor wire for the alternator, once hes fixed it and used the car for abit of a drive about it should be fine, hopefully

Thanks Mr hutchy, did have a broken load wire, it had broke really close to plug, so would have been difficult to repair. So I cut the plug out and soldered in two lengths of cable, and guess what?? IT HAS CURED IT!!! Been out in it tonight and all seems good. Thanks again.

He'll be after my job next.

What colour was the wire you fixed? Or were both broken?

It was the blue one, the brown and green one was still intact.
