Cambelt change

Featured Replies

Just done a cam belt change on my 2010 110bhp TDI. Based on info from Germany I decided to replace at 90,000km or 6yr, whichever came first.

For those who might be considering this job themselves, it's actually not too bad as far as cam belts go. Only really awkward part was removing the right hand engine point from the engine. Otherwise access quite good and a relatively straightforward job.

Did you replace the water pump?

Yes I did, but the auxiliary belt looked in very good condition so I kept it. Also it's not that bad to replace if it fails.

I've just had the cam belt, pulleys and water pump changed at 50,000 miles / 5 years. Also oil/filter, new battery and MOT. Asked him to check brakes / discs and he said pads 40% worn and a slight ridge on discs which he would have another look in about 8000 miles (he suggested). All done by a wonderful guy in one man workshop about 100 yards down the road - and we are located in an isolated rural area - so lucky to have him. Total charge was £475 which I thought quite reasonable
