battery problem

Hi 

Sorry if not allowed in this section. 

Haven't got experience with cars mechanics at all

 

By accident when jump stared my skoda i accidentally  started the engine and  it made some spark-like noise, no smoke or anything but then it didn't charge the flat battery at all. I had the car with good battery running for good 5min but flat battery car didn't seem to pic up the juice.

When I check voltage when plugged in with leads  it shows around 2V when I unplug the leads ( so just battery) it shows 11V 

When jump started it was properly connected, good car leads on the battery, flat battery car positive on the battery negative on the metal bit.

Could it be that the alternator (that uses the engine to charge the battery) has stopped working?

 

You shouldn't be hearing any electrical noises or seeing any sparks when jump-starting the car, the fact you have would suggest that you have fried something electrical.

Have you checked all the fuses under the cover by the battery?

If you have jumped car with a much newer car by chance due to intelligent charging on newer models it could have tried to push in alot higher voltage to try and bring the flat battery as quick as possible. This can sometimes be in region of 18v which if you car is not of the same age or electrical setup it can fry things very quickly. Just a thought

If your battery is reading 2v and that's not a typo then its completely shot, it won't charge up if so.

Battery with engine stopped should read around 12.6v and with engine running it should read around 14.4v.

If battery is showing 12v or below (when charged) it will be on its way out. If less than 14v when engine is running, there may be an alternator issue.

That's what I originally thought it could be the  alternator.

Thanks skodacarman  checked all leads before and after, that wasn't an issue from the start thanks for help

Countryboy checked all fuses straight after all happened, they are all ok.

PerformanceDisel   The car with good battery was skoda fabia 2001 1.4 the one with flat battery octavia 2007 I would have not think of different voltage

Paddypaws   only reads 2V when on the car and with leads unpluged in with leads unplugged 11V

If its reading 2v in the car connected up the battery is totally deceased. Even under load whilst the starter motor is turning it should only drop a couple of volts.

Your battery is dead. Buy a new one
