The TSI oil usage thread

Featured Replies

Ok... 2400 miles in and not used a drop so far. I've not even purchased a top up bottle yet.... Maybe a shouldn't have said that ....

Running-in is often the time when an engine uses oil particularly badly, but at 1300 miles and not used a drop so far - just checked tonight again as it happens...

...hope it continues, 'cos I'm sick and tired of putting oil in the wife's Peugeot 207 1.4 VTi!

My Octy mk3 1.8tsi havent used any oil for the first 10k kilometers. At least not enough to be noticeable on the dipstick.

In my previous car, Superb 2 hatch 1.8 TSI DSG, I've never had to refill oil. 140K km so far. TSI are damn good engines.

Checked mine yesterday, 3000 miles and the level is showing at the bottom of the hatched area on the dip stick.

I guess it needs 0.5L?

Can't source any Mobil 1 around here unless I drive to Bromley Halfords so have bought some off the t'internet, £25 for 2 x 1L bottles inc. delivery, Halfords wanted £18.99 for one bottle!

Opie Oils are always a good place on-line and normally have cracking deals :)

Yes, I ordered from Opie Oils.

The wifes's car Octavia 1.2 TSi went in for it's 1st service 2 weeks ago @ 15,700km & not a drop of oil needed to be put in to her up til then, the car that is...

Use Castrol Edge 0w/30, Phil. Its only £8 a litre.

My old 1.4 Fabia Vrs used to get through a litre of oil every 1700 miles.

only if you're on fixed intervals, as it's VW502 00 standard, not the VW 504 00 required for variable services.

My top up bottle (never opened) of Castrol Edge 5w-30 lists VW 504 00/507 00 and fulfils the requirements of former VW 503 01 specification

Yep, Edge LL 5w-30 is 504 00/507 00, but Edge 0w-30 is only 502 00/505 00

Which one of these is better 0W/30 or 5W/30.  I am on fixed intervals due to short commutes to and from work (10 mile each way) with the 220TSI.

Thanks

Checked the oil on my 1.4 tsi at the weekend now that the car has just rolled over to six thousand miles. Yes is used some, about a third to a quarter way from the bottom of the dip stick

So think I need to put a drop in to keep it sweet and happy. I'll check out what I can find online at Opie Oils suitable for variable service.

I've just had it confirmed by CS that on my car the factory fill was 504 oil, so that would be something equivalent to the Edge LL 5w-30. They also said I could top up or do an oil change with either 502 or 504 on the fixed service intervals, and confirmed that many dealers still put 504 in on fixed services.

Personally, I will intend to top up if required before the first service with Edge LL 5w-30 504 as its the closest thing to what is already in there.

They also said that 504 was the superior oil, but I'm not sure that's universally true; yes, its the long-life spec, but you choose the fixed servicing also for arduous duty, when a 502 is more suitable - I would say that a 0w-30 502 could be better for arduous use that involved frequent cold starts due to the 0w rating. Horses for courses, really.

Minefield really, but they'll probably both be fine for very very many miles...

That looks a lot easier to read than on the 2.0 - the shape of the tube seems to cause the dipstick to scrape a load of oil off the sides and give a false level if you're not careful.

Why topup? Seems normal, almost in the middle as it should

Actually, the manual suggests the 'minimum' is 1/4 up from the bottom kink in the dipstick...

Well our 2.0 TSI has covered 1,250 miles now and the oil is getting low. It hadn't used a drop when I last checked at 750 miles. That's around the time I started pressing on and winding up the revs, as per the manual, but I don't know whether the two are related.

This is the first time I've followed any running in process, and since the car used some oil anyway I wonder should I have bothered lol.

The Internet says Shell Helix Ultra is probably best followed by Mobil1 then Castrol Titanium FST. Anyone know different?

Hey Derv ... Just passed 3k and still no oil usage. My 1ltr top up is forlorn and unloved in the boot.... Wouldn't worry it will probably stop again !

More than likely, or at least I hope. To be fair it's hard to find a level surface around here, our drive is on an incline and the roads are all heavily cambered. I might get it nice and hot on a run to a car park / garage somewhere and check again tomorrow before I buy a top up bottle. The dipstick is about a third of the way up from the bottom kink, but I wonder how much the slight tilt of the car (to the left or right from the driver's perspective) is affecting the read. Either way a tenner for a bottle of the good stuff probably won't go to waste over the next few years.

Does anyone know how much oil is represented between the bottom and top kinks in the dipstick? There's nothing in the manual and I don't want to overfill obviously. I'm guessing 0.5 or 1 litre but haven't a clue really. :dull:

So far 2000 miles in and hardly used any oil.  Only the first two rows of dots are uncovered, however it is very hard to read with the oil being so clear.
