Improtent torque - wheel bolts

Featured Replies

This is also a important question?

First off all

The torque on the wheel bolts?

Is there some different difference between steel and aluminum wheel?

Should be bolts be dry, just a minimum with oil/moistened or oiled? Just a little thin oil?

I have head so much so I am confused...

I need a professional good and safe solution I can trust?

120Nm. Dry, no oil. All OEM fabia wheels use the same bolts

I had normally used a very little thin oil on the bolts, because the can be to hard to loosen in the spring. Salty roads and so on.

But I can understand that the stretch in the bolts can be to hard with 120 Nm an oil...

VW in Norway says also dry, but NAF/(Norwegian AA) says a very little oil on the treads. So thats some of there reason that I ask.

I dot takes shortcuts in mine cars.

I've never had trouble getting the wheel bolts off and have never used any oil.

Getting the wheels off the hub however... Now I always use a bit of copper grease around the centre bore to avoid the wheel corroding to the hub.

@ Torbo: Buy a longer tool for loosening the bolts? :)

Touch of Coperslip on the bolts goes along way to aid in removal. Doesn't effect the torque they hold by much.

I keep a breaker bar in the car.

How much does it affect it by?

Thats not a breaker bar! I have a 1200mm 1/2" breaker. I call her betsy.

I have a 6 foot scaffold pole I slide over the breaker bar for extra oomph.

I use copper grease on every wheel bolt I ever come across.

Even if it results it the wheel bolt being torqued up a bit more than the 120NM its not going to cause any issues. Most garages are guilty of over torquing with impact wrenches anyway. I find that if I tighten the wheel bolts are hard as I can with a normal length 1/2" ratchet its about right.

Are you a qualified engineer or motor mechanic / technician?

I hope you do not put other peoples wheels on vehicles.

In an emergency ,it's possible to use a small hydraulic jack to crack open a wheelnut using the wheelbrace.( with wheel on GROUND) I've helped folks out this way in the olden days when air gun frenzy was all too common, and I carried a hydralic jack.. Sometimes it's necessary to get someone to stand on the foot brake to hold the wheel

AND if wheels are fitted in tyre places, stand over them and insist on 120 NM, NOT LB/FT (as I've been quoted by one tyre place).

For emergencies by the road side I carry a cheapo torque wrench and a long socket. It's accurate to get me home and keeps my decent one in a nice dry /safe place, if I have to change the wheel, as for all the distances I drive these days a can of gunk will suffice at the roadside( not much fun changing a wheel with a dodgy hip). For those tight wheels, I carry a wooden mallet- less chance of damaging the alloys.

Now one question for trained blokes- what is safe for the anti theft nut, or is it as hard as the normal wheel nuts.
