As title I need some advice on my VRS, After I brought the car my heart sank as I saw a recent receipt for a dreaded oil consumption test but only one of them. I contacted skoda UK to see if they had any details on the work done, they gave me the dealer details so I contacted them. The dealer over the phone confirmed that it had in fact had 2 oil consumption tests failed both, then had a load of warranty work done, followed by a 3rd consumption test which it passed, all of which I was happy to hear.

 

But this is where the problem started the garage said they could not provided details of the exact work done to the car as I was not the registered owner at the time to work was done, they said it was data protection ( I did point out that I didn't want any personal details of the owner, just details of the work carried out so I was unsure of how data protection would apply), they advised I contact skoda uk to get the details.

 

I have emailed Skoda UK explained the situation, and again got told data protection they couldn't tell me, I emailed back stating that as warranty work (or any work) was carried out on the car in Oct/Nov 2015 surely that work, and the parts used would come with a 12 month guarantee, and that guarantee would transfer to the new owner me. I also pointed out that if I start getting issues with the car how do I know they are not a result of the work done in Oct/Nov. Again I got back data protection, and also Skoda UK have no details of what warranty work was carried out, and advised me to check with the dealer again.

 

So I'm left a bit in limbo Skoda UK say they dont have the details of what warranty work was carried out and to check with the garage, the garage say they can't give me the information, and to check with Skoda UK, I just want to know what work was done on the car.

 

To top it all this morning the check oil light came on, so I think the car may still be using oil, when I picked it up the could dip level was above the half way level of the cross hatched area.

 

so can I ask 

 

1. how much is normal usage of oil on these

2. how much oil does it take to go from the bottom of the cross hatch to the top

3. when cold dipped should the oil be at the top of the cross hatch, and then when hot dipped should it be about half way up the cross hatched area.

4. Has anyone got any suggests on what I can do now to get the information of what work was carried out on the car.

 

Even with all this I'm loving the car, I'll keep a closer eye on the oil level, and I've taken out a warranty that covers the engine and gearbox (well pretty much covers everything) so I'm not too worried about it.

When cold dipped the oil should be above the top of the cross hatch with 3.6 litres. With a hot check at the top part of the cross hatch.

Share some more details about your car, year, colour, body shape, it could be someones old one!

Ps any work carried out under manufacturers warrant expires with the warranty

Parts paid for have a 2 year warranty. The Twincharger is a bit different, Skoda knew the issues and if aware within warranty and no work done other than breather mod and software update, say no oil spray jets, then they never dealt with it. So what a call handler says means nothing, get a customer services manager that knows about the fundamental design and manufacturing failures and the on going issues.

The Data Protection Act is often used (incorrectly) by companies as means of saying p**s off rather than spend time assisting an inquirer.

Re data protection and rubbish Skoda come away with. They have your safety and responsibility. If they paid to repair or replace parts in a vehicle you own then they need to tell you what parts. The car is your property and you need to know what engine and map it has, so what ecu. If they updated the engine, replaced it or remapped then data protection works in your favour. tell them in writing you want the invoice for work done, and if a new engine the spec and engine number as the engine left the factory to go to the dealership. It di have an engine number, and shipping info, spec etc.

Cheers for the reply guys, on a cold dip when I got the car it was below the top of the cross hatched bit, so I assume the oil level was a little low, I stopped on my way into work when the light came on and added 1/4 of a litre, I'll check the oil again tonight, and top up to the correct level, I have done over 700 miles in the time I've had it, and so I guess some oil usage was to be expected.

 

Can I also just check if you have a VRS that uses oil, as long as you top it up etc is it a bad thing?, even topping it up with the engine eventually go bang, or if you are prepared to top it as required will the engine continue to run fine??.

 

Car's getting new discs, pads today and having Denso plugs fitted, so interested to see the condition of the old plugs

I also managed to find the Details of the service manager at the garage so I'm going to contact him and see if he will at least confirm what work was done, even if he won't send me the paperwork, and thinking of finding someone higher up at Skoda UK to email, as the manager I was speaking to said there was nothing more he could do, and I asked to speak to someone higher up and got fobbed off with he will tell you the same its company policy re data protection

From thr correct level of oil it can go 1.3 or more litre low and. No warning light or message. That is more then 33% less then the quantity. Not good. So 1 litre top up is not emough. Some are 1.5 litres low and no low oil warning, just low oil pressure light / message

Get and oil and filter change 5w 40 oil and then monitor oil use

Or 5w 30 and have the service garage seal the filler and dip stick, see when the light comes on.

Cheers it had an service/oil change just before I got it at the dealership selling it, and before I checked the level at the dealership (it was a renault dealership oddly enough) so I suspect they maybe didn't put the correct amount of oil in, I will top the oil up so its full, and then monitor it cheers for all the help

I read the threads from what the service receptionist said there was an extensive amount of work done under warranty in Oct15, so hopefully I will have more luck getting the full details from the service manager

The records if official Skoda worl are for the car, skoda uk can tell you. As to the service carried out, is there no invoice. 3.6 litres 5w 30 full synthetic long life VW 504 00, as to oil level the cold dip let's you know enough oil, the hot check as well. A hot check is hot, not warm to get a good check

It was an arnold clark garage that sold the car and they stamped the service book but no invoice, skoda sent me the service record that just show when it was service not what was done, and it was serviced at an independant skoda garage in Feb, to be honest as its arnold clark I suepect they probably just looked it over did nothing and stamped the service book

When I bought my car, I called skoda customer services and asked if the car had ever had any work done under warranty. They confirmed there was some work done and they told me everything that was done, so unsure as to why they're being so unhelpful with you.

I'd give them a call back and push it maybe? The work that was done on mine was minor stuff. Like replacement door trim and handle, steering wheel badge replaced and few other things.

I can not get my Pm,s on right now, can you maybe say which Arnold Clark sold it, is this the car from Dumfries?

Yep from Dumfires Arnold clark renault   have I brought a lemon???

On a more positive note the service manager has confirmed if I can send him proof of ownership he can give me the requested information :-)

Good, and Skoda UK have done that for 4 years past even before people bought cars. John Good, Tom Chadwick and other Customer Services managers is Skoda Hq Milton Keynes. They sent out emails to prospective buyers since they knew that mine field of buying a Twincharger.

Yeah He was much better than the tool of a manager I was dealing with at Skoda UK, he just kept spouting data protection even when I said data protection only covered personal information!!, will email him the V5 on monday and then should get the full details of what was done, and I'll top the oil up tonight and closely monitor it   

Right this is a Jabazuma test I do. Works for me. Cold dip the oil. So above the cross hatch. Now open drivers door, key in and start engine. Stop as soon as started. Dip it. This level is now at top of cross hatch

If you go for a drive say at least 10 miles and then do a hot check, likely identical level. A Jabazuma is dead handy when checking before setting off. Warm checks are useless. IMO. Easy peasy. Have fun.

using a bit of oil is fine, and will not effect the longevity of the engine...if it was 1/4 litre in 700 miles, thats not a lot..... a litre in 2800 miles? thats ok..... mine used to use a litre very 2-5k depending on how it was driven.... (using less the harder it was driven) just top it up when ness and enjoy the car!!

Have you known of a 1.4 TSI twincharger that had the correct quantity of oil in and then had a Low Oil light or message come on because the oil had dropped by only 250ml?

 

There are numerous owners that have not had a warning light or message and 1000 ml was not enough to bring the oil back up to 3.6 litres.
