05 4x4 1.9 estate

Featured Replies

hi,just wondered if any of you lads can tell me are there any things to be wary of with the above car, i,m thinking of taking the plunge but i,m just a little bit wary. the car has a full service history with approx  120k miles, it has the 1.9 tdi pd engine, also would it be worth taking out an extended warranty and lastly where is the best place to purchase warranty.any help appreciated, thanks

I've been looking at warranties myself recently. They don't get good reviews, when it comes to claiming they invariably wriggle out of paying. Especially 100k miles plus, reading the small print the car has to drastically fail and actually break down to get any chance of a pay out. I've decided to leave it. So many horror stories of great sales pitch, then when you actually claim useless.

The pd engine is notoriously reliable, its the cabbies favourite after all! Second hand parts are plentiful, available.

I'm a relative newbie to the Octavia, but was looking at a 05 reg 4x4 model myself a few weeks back.  If possible try and find out if the vehicle has had regular Haldex Oil Changes (every 20,000 miles on the MK1 and every 40,000 miles on the MK2 I believe) ... this is in addition to the normal service schedule. An 05 reg model should be the MK2 I would have thought ....

But as paddy paws has said the PD engine is the best of the bunch IMO.

I ended up going for a 57 reg Octavia 1.9 tdi (non 4 x 4) as I couldn't justify the extra road tax that the 4 x 4 insists upon :(

I'm sure other, more knowledgable people will be along shortly though ....

thanks for the replies, not sure if i need the 4x4 either i do a fair bit of hunting so it could be handy

Just remember (and apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, it's not the intention) ... in order for the 4 x 4 mode to be used, remember to turn off traction control (or ASR I think it might be called) .... seems a bit of a paradox, but ASR will cut the power to a spinning wheel, whereas in 4 x 4 mode you need power to spinning wheels, in order for the sensor to detect, and transfer power to the remaining wheels ... does that make sense ?

Not correct. The Haldex operates separately from the traction control (part of the esp fitted to the 4x4). Both can operate together though.

The official service schedule for the Haldex system covers only changing the oil, not the filter, so worth getting the filter and oil done. Though a dealer will likely refuse to change the filter, as the computer says it is not required.

I stand corrected - probably misread the posts I was looking at when I was researching the 4 x 4 Haldex models ..
