felicia 1300 engine noise

Featured Replies

whats the normal sound of this engine?

60k just come by, it sounds fine on idle, but rattles a bit when you rev it, and it stays there while the revs are up.

it drives fine, so don't think it's a major problem (yet?), but curious if 'they all do that' or if i have a problem.

cheers for any advise.

errrrm ignorant a bit

but all my old skodas 120,130,136 all sounded like they where about to blow

the rattle ans roll i think is ok, depends how hard you push

worse when the noise was behind your head :) the calttering is skoda ....... tappets going like crazy

I think the engines are a bit rattly anyway.

I have had 3 skoda i being a felicia all 1300 engine and they all sound a bit rattly

Its because they are overhead valve engines.

Nothing to much to worry about but you could always adjust your valve clearance it may help a bit but i think you will find it will still rattle..

great cheers guys.

Just needed re-assurance

The main noise with the 1.3 engine is the timing chain. They get pretty loose and make a right din, but its seldom worth changing them. If the noise bothers you, then get it changed, the difference is remarkable! ;)

Thread Hijack, Tom have you ever changed the timing chain yourself? My 1300 is really noisy and I changed the timing chain, but I reckon its gone loose again after only a few thousand miles coz the engines so noisy. The tappets are loud at the mo granted, but I've just changed the clutch and I just can't imagine the chain's gone slack agin.

I'm afraid not, perhaps there is a tensioning issue?

With regards to the tappets - that is a job I did do myself. Simply removed them and ground them flat again - they are noisy because they are pitted.

You'd think so wouldn't you? Unfortunately there is no tensioner on the 1300 engine, the distance between the two sprockets is exactly to size for the two spindles that they go onto. Re-grinding the tappetts, that's a good idea.

nothing to worry about, just the tappets, and all that effects is a small amounbt of power and economy.

for the record the engines are generally very smooth and whoever that was that said skoda 1.3s are rattly obviously hasnt driven very many cars. i have something like 8 or 9 skoda engines here and the only rattly one is the one with badly set tappets. the quietest car i have EVER heard is my mates 130lse, it is so quiet you would swear he was permanently coasting it

:) To be honest the old iron head rear mounted Skoda engines were far quieter than the alloy head 135/136 engines. The timing chains are prone to rattling at higher mileages on them all, but as S.S. says apart from that the older ones are virtually silent.

i have a felicia, and if i'm correct in gettin what ur sayin, yeah there are rattles, but mine inparticular has vibrations running through it at certain revs which causes some noise, i think mainly from the exhaust...i dunno. not too fussed bout it really. Also, on acceleration, the car tends to make a lots of noise, and a whirrring sound....hard to describe. i think the car is just prone to it. But it doesn't affect the car, all good.
