DSG self revving

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a question in regards with my Skoda. It is a Suerb model, Estate, 2011, 2.0 TDI and has 85k miles.

I went on a trip in Europe and did about 3300 miles in about 1 week. Somewhere at the middle of the trip my gearbox started to act funny.

On the motorway on cruise control at 70mph the car was self revving 150rpm every 5 seconds. I could also feel the engine trying to push the car every time the revving was happening. I noticed also that this revving was happening only when the car had to accelerate. For instance if I was in D6 downhill at 70mph there was no self revving. However, up the hill it was doing it every 5 seconds and it was really annoying. I even took a video with this but I can't post it here.

Back home I went to the skoda dealer and they checked it. They came back and said that there is nothing wrong with the car and they updated the software to the latest version and all is good. However I found that it does the same thing immediately after I left the garage.

I had a look on different forums but I cannot find anything related with this issue.

Does anyone have any idea if is anything I can do to fix it?

I am not even sure if the DSG is faulty, there may be something else inside there which is causing these issues but I need professional advice.

Thank you,

Alex

Welcome to the forum.

The issue might be a fault with Incline Sensors, which i really know nothing about, but hopefully others will,

then you can go back to the Dealership and enquire with the Master Tech on that issue.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

Sorry if I don't know but Master Tech is the software for Skoda?

Might be the Incline Sensors but the car dose the same thing on a flat road. As I found first on the Motorway in France which is pretty flat.

I was also thinking if there may an option with the clutch, I don't know hot this does work but I know that Skoda did a recall a few years ago for these cars and changed the clutch. For whatever reason the owner of my car did not get to garage back then and I have the same clutch now. I did asked the Skoda garage here and they said that they cannot do anything as Skoda will not accept to change the clutch after the recall ended.

Hello majkelo

Thank you for the reply. I will try with the battery off for a night no problem. I did not think about this.

I will let you know if it does any good.

Thanks,

Alex

Sorry on Master Tech,

i meant the Head Technician in the Workshop, the most Qualified and best trained one they have.

The one with 'All the Gear' and hopefully 'some idea how it works'.

There was a World Wide Recall on DSG's,   this did not include Europe which appears not to be in the world. (they call them Recall Actions now though.)

Europe gets 'Service Campaigns'  and these do not expire, they get done or not, and if they get done then Skoda / VW know there might be issues still, so they do not get away with saying Out of Warranty Now.

They know there were Fundamental Design, Manufacturing or Quality Control Issues.

(Why in other World Regions they extend Warranties.)

No idea if your 6 Speed Box required a Service Campaign the way 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch did, but check if there is an outstanding Service Campaign.

Thanks for the link,

I entered my VIN number but it seems that is nothing for my car.

"Dear customer,
No relevant recall campaigns have been launched by ŠKODA for the entered VIN"

Alex

The 6 speed has no service campaign. Just oil and filter change every 40k miles. Wasn't aware of any recall for a clutch change.

Was it like this (not my video just a random one I found):

Sounds like a cruise control issue rather than a DSG issue

Brake lights working OK out of interest?

Hello bigjohn,

Yes, brake lights are working and it dose this with no cruise control as well.

Thank you

Alex

Silly question.. what was the weather like? I have notices that if it is very windy and you are using the cruise control the car seems to fight against the wind, so when the wind gust blows it tries to accelerate to compensate, then when the gust dies down it lifts the power off again to compensate if that makes sense...

Must say I have not notices so much with my Superb but my old Leon and Exeo seemed to do this.

Hello Phil-E,

Yes, exactly like in the video.

That is the problem I have with my car.

hello stuarttunstall

It's nothing to do with the weather, it was a sunny day, dry, 12 degrees.

The video posted here

It's the exactly same issue I have with my car.

Thank you

I have uploaded my video I took on the motorway in France.

Which Bulb has failed?

& have you just started off on a journey the coolant temp is still low?

Looks like the not up to temperature engine & the Cruise Control is causing the RPM fluctuation.

It was just the headlight on the left side. But that was replaced at the next petrol station.

When I took the video I was at the end of the journey after over 1000 miles. The tempreture was low during driving but went to 90 degrees when I was parking or sitting at traffic lights. After I went to the garage and they have updated the software it apears that now the tempretaure stays at 90 degrees but my rpm's are still revving. Maybe that was just a sensor fault with the software that was fixed.

Yesterday evening I got a call from the Skoda garage here on the island and they asked me to take the car there on Monday as they want to run some more tests with the car and send all the data over to Skoda as they have no idea why the car is acting like that.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that definitely looks like a problem with the DSG. That looks exactly like the RPM fluctuations in the video I posted. The uploader of that youtube video said his problem was diagnosed as the mechatronics.

If this only happens in gears 6, 4 and 2 then it's a problem with that clutch in particular.

Either way it's the DSG that's at fault and pretty sure.

This is what I am afraid cuz the mechatronics cannot be fixed and a new DSG from Skoda is around £3200 + VAT.

?

What do you mean the 'Mechatronic' / MCU (control unit) can not be fixed.

http://evosoft.dk/tech.html

It can be replaced.

Where are you getting your information, all online?

The "mechatronic" unit can be replaced, but still not cheap, around £1200 I think :( In fact I think it is one of the very few parts that can be replaced on a DSG....

If you PM me the VIN I can get a price off ETOS... ;)

One of the very few parts that 'Full Trained Volkswagen Group FITTERS' can replace,

like Oil & Clutch Packs.

Where as Fully Trained Automatic Specialists with all the gear and the ideas can do so much more.

Know how to do Software Updates using external power etc when those are required, replace valves, seals etc.

Volkswagen Group Official Dealerships hourly rates often mean a new unit is the best option,

well one of their Refurbished Units / Rebuilt Units.

You pays your money and you get what you want.

A new / replacement Gearbox and a 2 Year Warranty.

or

Skoda / VW own up to the on going issues with Fundamental Design, manufacturing and quality control issues,

and they foot the bills where they got things wrong even out of Manufacturers Warranty.

Treat EU Buyers like those in China and Asia and the US of A get treated.

I use vehicle registration data for work, and using the latest I have at home, which was early 2015 there were around 500,000 VAG Group vehicles fitted with DSG gear boxes, this does not include other manufactures that now offer the same technology.. including Ford, Mitsubishi, Smart, Hyundai and Porsche, Bugatti.

Bear in mind this was up until early 2015 so there will be a lot more now.... (can confirm Monday at work) so on the whole they are reliable and seems most issues/recalls are to do with the incorrect oil in the gearbox... I suppose lack of oil changes may also be a factor if owners fail to get them serviced...

Remember forums only get to hear of the problem cars, not the 1000's that never have issues... I love my DSG, but I did take out the 5 year warranty when I purchased the car almost 2 years ago for "peace of mind"

I am not saying that it cannot be replaced but in Jersey there is a bit more difficult as we have just 1 Skoda dealer and only they know how to deal with DSG gearboxes and everything else.

I will go this Monday to the garage back and I will have to wait to see what they are saying as they want to take all the data and send it over to Skoda, probably in UK or to the factory, not sure about this.

After they come up with the fix then I will analyse my options and see what I can do to fix it. I really like this car and is more than perfect for motorways and I don't want to end up giving it as PX.
