Big plans afoot for the yellow peril, don't be alarmed, the filthy example you see above hasn't just been extracted from the car, it's a spare engine I've purchased for the next stage of the project.

Can't wait to see what plans you have for the engine.

As you know I've not long had a new genuine SE sunset glass rear window fitted and decided to have the rear doors tinted to match. Having picked the car up I was happy with the quality of the tint but it was noticeably darker even despite being assured it was as close a match as possible.. Lesson learned there then!

New sunset glass is available but at nearly £300 for the rear door drop glass and fixed quarter Windows it was a painful prospect..

My local fabia breaker has a number of late mk1 sport models in with sunset glass so I scooted over today and picked them up.

Here's a pic, guess which ones the real deal..

 

 

 

Fitted all four Windows tonight and the car looks how I wanted all along,

Update time!

 

Back in post #52 you will recall a picture of a rather grubby looking 1.9 PD engine from a Fabia vRS. This has been purchased for a number of reasons, most of them totally logical, others are reasons only I get so here goes.

 

The current engine is as sweet as a proverbial nut, running 2.1 bar of boost, making 234bhp and generally being fantastic, however the lure for more power and torque is never far away and as I hope I've proved so far, if a job is worth doing, it's worth doing right. The existing engine has now covered 107k, has never been apart (original head gasket), standard injectors/cam etc, so to suddenly screw loads more power from it is going to end in oily expensive angry tears.

 

Cue the engine above. From a 130k miles bog standard vRS with full dealer history, serviced every 10k, and complete with injectors etc. Why one with miles on? My reasoning being a block that's had plenty of use will have been through countless thousands of heat cycles and should be the strongest there is. The mileage as you will see shortly has little impact on a PD engine as long as the oil is changed for the right stuff at the right time.

 

All i'll re-use from the engine above is the cylinder block and the crank, everything else is being stored as decent used spares for the future.

 

The current state of play is the engine is totally stripped, just a bare block and crank to be de-rusted, then sent off to be machined to my spec.

 

 

 

You can make out the original factory honing marks in the bores still, the crank is as new, and the rest of the engine internally could pass for a very low mileage unit.

 

The outside of the block, in particular the front face is crusty, the cast iron corrodes in the steady blast of moist salty air when being used all year so corrosion is inevitable if left untreated.

 

The block and crank will be going to another mate of mine on the forum for an overbore to 81mm, and then when its back it'll be fitted with new ceramic coated pistons, forged H section rods, and will be built up to a strong 2.0 capacity bottom end..

 

Rest of the build will unfold over the next few months, just waiting for a number of expensive parcels to arrive from Uk and European diesel tuning specialists, so i'll update more as we go along

Anyone thats never used DeoxC will be very very impressed when matts block is removed from the solution

I'm interested to see how the block comes out myself. Having only used industrial stuff in our washing off tank would be good to see how it compares. Ours usually gets changed weekly but the newer stuff we use is no where near as good as the older products we can no longer get.

How much is the bag and recommended mixing numbers?

Adam- the 4kg bag was about 40 quid delivered, the strongest solution the recommend is one to four, mines about one to seven at the moment. The blocks still bubbling under the water and there's a lovely scummy mix of orange on the water surface already.

Gonna fish the block out mid week and see what's happened so far

I've spent ages looking into the top end of the engine setup and was sorely tempted with a conversion the same as Alex, ie 170PD 16v head conversion but me being old and straightforward want to keep the car in someway original, as in the way it was designed.

 

So, looking at keeping "it real" means staying with the 8v PD head but making it as good as we can. Now Faboka has been successfully mapping a VW Polo 130PD with a 10mm Lift NPS camshaft and it's been making very good numbers on the dyno, so I figured using that camshaft, coupled with a modified head would be, like a cheap razor, the best a man can get.

 

Hence this...

 

 

 

A new genuine VW head casting, CNC ported and with the golf ball dimpling on the inlet tracts. No point leaving the valve sizes standard if I'm chasing ideal flow, so hence these..

 

 

 

Bigger inlet and exhaust valves, matched to custom machined seats, uprated Rosten double valve springs and uprated titanium spring retainers.

The order for the NPS camshaft will be going off to Norway soon so hopefully i'll have all the parts in the next few weeks to build pretty much the best 8v head I can afford.

It's getting there, the trouble with the corrosion on the cast iron being so heavy is it takes a mixture of soaking, scraping then soaking again to get it all off.

 

The front face is about a 1/3rd done now. I'll get some more pics over the weekend

This is going to be epic, I have painted my block a few times witht the engione in, Im swapping it this year and I cant wait to do a proper job of it, If it turns out anything like yours ill be happy.
