In Car Toolkit

Featured Replies

Hi,

Wondering what sort of tools people on here keep in their S3?

Only had it a few weeks, so still working this out.

My old Cmax for example was impossible to even change most bulbs without Torx screwdrivers....

The only tool in my car will be me!!

None.

A proper tool to undo wheel bolts.

Nothing. Thats what breakdown service is for :) and if a bulb needs changing the car will go to the dealer for them to change and work to pay for it !

To actually give you a helpful reply:

A reversible screwdriver is handy plus a 10mm spanner. I also carry a tube that fits over the wheel wrench to extend it so you can get nuts off easily. Duct tape and cable ties are also useful to have.

Some insulating tape for the head of the wheel bolt wrench to prevent it from scratching the crap out of the alloys! The casting process always leaves some horrid edges on it.

The rear lamp clusters and front fog light fittings can be removed with the tool that comes with the car.

The headlights have plastic caps that unscrew by hand.

Most other small bulbs (non LED number plate lights and most interior lights) are accessed by prising out the fitting.

No tools are needed to change the wiper blades.

I always have a Leatherman stashed in the car which deals with most occurrences. I'm an air conditioning engineer so I am usually carrying a plethora of tools and equipment capable of reducing most of the car to component parts!

Generally though, you don't really need to carry loads of tools around to cover basic maintenance and upkeep of the car. But a small roll of basic tools in the boot won't ever do any harm!

the only thing I usually add is an extending wheel brace to give some leverage to get out the wheel bolts.

the halfords one are quite weak by the way and will work approx. once from my experience before they bend a lot

the teng ones seem to be quite a bit better and similarly priced. ymmv.

As above, I keep basic tools in the spare wheel well along with tow rope and booster cables (although not yet transferred over to this one yet). I also keep a well stocked first aid kit and a car kit comprising of basic food, water, blanket and other useful materials like duct tape and strong plastic sheeting. Also an extra torch, strong work gloves and a bag of spare change/notes for emergency parking/tolls/cream teas :)

And a flaming great IKEA bag for every time we go to the supermarket and the wife forgets the carrier bags...

I used to keep a few tools in the back. Over 100000 miles later and no break downs. ..I no longer bother. Plus would be good to use my aa membership if it should happen.
