Shimmy...

Featured Replies

Ive got a steering wheel shimmy at 70mph in th straight on/dead ahead with no weight on the steering wheel, my front tyres are the original Michelins coming upto 35,000 could this be a factor?

Yeah, there can't be much life left in them tyres, as they've worn they may be feathering slightly.

Either that or you've perhaps lost a weight or two off the inside of the rim. Puddles and jet washes are good for pulling them off after the adhesive ages.

£130 for 2 Michelins then..... :notme:

Uniroyal Rain Sport 3 :) £100 delivered for a pair :)

I am also of the Uniroyal RainSport 3 fanbase but you will get NO where near 35000 but they do grip bloody well in the wet

But the cheapest Michelin is £85+/piece + p&p ... maybe it will be good for 35k ;) but you can push it safely to the limit only as long as there is at least half of the original depth :) and when you start enjoying your car - they WON'T last 35k :) :) :)

Kwikfit online are doing 205/55 R16 Michelin Energysavers for £62.19ea fitted

They were the cheapest when I bought my winter tyres!

I've found the Superb II is quite sensitive to wheel balancing

I have 225/45/17 - about £48/piece + £6 p&p for all four :) Cheapest you can find ANYWHERE :)

Mine were recently installed and balanced and filled with Nitrogen :)

But right now I'm looking for 18" :) almost the same price as for 17" :) plus wheels of course ;)

Honestly - I don't care :)

On my Seat Leon 2.0 CR FR 170ps, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 lasted about a year :) ~10k front - there was probably 3mm left - swapped with rears - probably 5mm left - but the car is gone so I can't verify :)

Now I have mentioned earlier Uniroyals - because of the price, fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise - my 2nd set, 1st was on Seat Ibiza :)

I think I won't try anything else anymore :) Goodyears were more expensive and not better in any way ...

Uniroyal is part of the Michelin Group anyway :)

If my Superb was a weekend warrior/trackday car/shopping trolley id not care about what i get out of tyres, if i had a £45K PA (or up) job with a company L&K 170PS it wouldnt matter but what I spend on my car comes out of my profits, spend less, make more, and im not Scottish or a Yorkshireman, it gets MORE services than Skoda advise but i see no need to buy tyres every 10,000 when mine have lasted 35,000 and are still legal (5mm last check), the backs succumbed to screws.....

I change my tyres with about 3mm near the edge  (usually much more in the centre of the tread)  and don't drive like the pope but it looks as though I'll get over 35k on my original Continental 205/55 16's. In my experience the higher profile tyre seems to last much longer and cost less .

On my old Superb I (also 205/55 16) Cheap tyres were useless (performance and life) but tyres such as Michelin Energy lasted 30k+ miles and the Quatrac 5's I sold it with were looking promising - but I get the feeling the Superb II is lighter on it's boots

Tyre life/cost/size was a factor in my car choice.

I have some friends where they seem to go through a set of ultra low profile tyres in not much more than 11k miles  and the tyres are £250+ each (eg BMW run flats). I do 15k miles/year so that would  be more than my £1000 "aim for" long term car annual capital cost (Buy for £10k - run for 10 years - throw away)

That's probably true.

As my last 3 cars were more and more powerful - and I like to push them a bit from time to time ;) tyres don't last too long ;) but it's my choice.

For me 17" is optimal - for now :) 19" uniroyal would be about £100/corner so £400/year would be too much - not that I can't afford simply doesn't make any sense - but £50/piece and £200/year for a set of 17" is acceptable.

Set of 18" would be about £15/piece more expensive - £60/year so still acceptable - and won't affect comfort.

Beside, if you can afford the car - you need to be able to maintain it properly - insurance, service, fuel, tyres, etc.

I don't understand people who moan about the mpg - your car will burn everything you put into the tank, period.

Of course sometimes there is a problem with engine or tyres - but then you need to fix it - or change the car if you can't afford it or you don't know how to drive it properly.

This is my private car so I need to pay for everything :)

I hope this time tyres will last much longer than 10k or a year - but when I was changing cars - I've checked maintenance costs ;)

And because I like to sometimes use full power of the car - I was changing oil in my Seat Leon FR 2.0 170ps DSG every 7.5k miles / 10k km - incl. all filters - plus always cool it down before turning off - it's cheaper than new engine or turbo ;)

I don't think I'll keep it for 10 years - probably for another 2-3 years max - then again something 1 year old and more powerful :)

Unfortunately I have had a longish commute (in my private car!) for the last 25 years so I do have to consider mpg (wish I could do it in the V6 auto!) - however fuel is not always the most significant cost, depreciation can be more

Basically I end up putting on highish mileages (last one was 170k) where in real terms the future trade in value is very low indeed even when just a few years old so after being stung a few times my strategy (since 2001) has been too buy cheap (but new or nearly new) and throw away when I'm done. With my current car waited until the announcement of the new Superb and watched until the right deal was available

Some PCH deals starting to look interesting though - even with mileage penalties (Was looking at Simpsons Skoda)

Obviously it's not just about money - I need a car to take the stress out of the daily grind, oh - and be able drive across Europe on holiday ( I hate airports)
