Swirls in paint

Featured Replies

As above thanks to the frankly hopeless pdi. She's coming up to 6 months old now and I have a bit of spare cash. Spend on kit to do it myself.... Pay to have it done ?

Suggestions please :-)

If they were there at collection after the PDI why did you take it with swirls?

Was the car not as new when collected, no swirls.

Have they not appeared because of your washing and polishing in the past 6 months?

Maybe best get someone else to do it if you have been doing it up to now.

I've yet to see a car leave a dealership without swirls and marred sections. That's why I made them leave the transport wrap on mine and not touch it, so I could prep and seal it myself.

Nick a decent detailer will be able to machine polish it and apply a good ceramic sealant for a couple of hundred. Well worth it IMHO. Check out reviews and portfolios of previous work first, the detailing world forums are a good place to start.

Well i used to prepare cars / vehicles for delivery, (& refinish) & i have seen hundreds that were perfect when leaving.

As good as ones that might be PDI'ed and then displayed when sitting in a showroom under the showroom lights.

I have seen some shockers.

But then the OP accepted what he / she got, drove it away, maybe never sealed, waxed or did any detailing.

that was not the fault of the Technician / Fitter or Valeter / Cleaner / untrained person that did Pre Delivery finishing.

 Pick the one that suits.

Even the Contractor brought in to do the £300 Life Shine with a £28 kit if that was done.

If you had one of those, look at the T&C's and complain if it was gash and looks gash now.

You must have better quality showrooms than the ones up our way... Every car in the place is swirled, marred and/or has holograms. Having seen the 'prep area' and its accompanying dirty reusable rags scattered on the gravel floor, and brushes on hosepipes I'm hardly surprised to be fair. :D

Use rubbish dealership that employs rubbish employees and management then you get that.

But if a car has a been turn out  badly a customer really should say within 6 minutes, maybe 6 hours, at least in 6 weeks.

The SALES PERSON doing the hand over should be inspecting and not delivering.

A Sales PDI.

But customers should do the PDI they need to, Pre Delivery Inspection.

If i paint a car or refinish panels and detail then i am responsible in 6 months time,

but lots of miles and washes and polishes can happen in 6 months.

Some wash & polish a car every day, every week or every month or have it done or go through a drive through.

A customer buying a £7,000 new car should get as nice a finish at collection as the customer collecting a £70,000 one IMO.

Nick it all comes down to how OCD you want to be.

Most people don’t even notice swirls, obviously you do though so you can either polish yourself by hand with something along the lines of SRP which will remove some of the swirls and fill the rest of them, the only issue with the fillers is they wash away so the car will need doing regularly.

Next up is buying a DA and doing it yourself, you can pick a decent one up for around £100 (links provided just to give an indication, no doubt there are cheaper ones available).

Or take it to a pro and get it done professionally, the problem here is like most trades there are loads that are crap, so always go off recommendations, I can recommend a couple of people but they are in Kent and Northampton so whilst they are very good (never heard of a bad word said about either of them) they are not exactly local to you!

Cost wise DIY with SRP will be less than £50 to do the lot, claying polishing etc,

go to a DA and you then add £100 on top of the DIY price,

then for someone else to do it it all comes down to what they use and good they are, for example someone doing it as a hobby will charge from £100 upwards,

whereas a top pro could be using over £200 worth of products on the car before you start to take into account their labour, many of the ceramic coating are sold only to the trade as some will require wet and dry to remove it if you get the application wrong!

Typically to have a Superb sized car to be corrected and then coated with Gtechniq Crystal Serum you could easily be looking at £1,000 upwards  :o  ... the quality is something else mind,

is it worth £1k+ well only you can decide, but so far in 7,500 miles I have yet to find a stone chip, I know others have not been so fortunate though so even the best ceramic coating will not stop everything, but it certainly appears to be helping.

A customer buying a £7,000 new car should get as nice a finish at collection as the customer collecting a £70,000 one IMO.

The problem is they do... the detailer that applied the Crystal Serum to mine regularly shows photos of new cars that arrive that have been PDI’s to a shocking standard, these include: BMW, Porsche, Ferrari etc!

I don't think the tone of this posts warrants a reply... Well apart from this one ..

There was no 'tone'  just a post having read post #1.

?

Are the Swirls after 6 months because of how treated since the PDI or were they caused at the PDI?

Or by who ever did the Preparation for Delivery?

Think the point is OP is asking whether he should do it himself or pay to have it done. Whether the swirls were there at pick up or not is neither here nor there.

True, just wonder what the PDI had to do with it though.

Has the Washes and polishing in the past 6 months caused the swirls, then best get someone else to detail the car.
