Weird mpg read-outs

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I have a 06 Fabia VRS and on the dash the read out for average mpg constantly reads between 42.1-42.7 mpg. Even when I'm putting my foot down and even when I've engaged cruise control in a high gear,n

Is it just a case of resetting the computer? If so, how?

Or is there a reason it's reading that figure on the dash. Just think it's a bit funny it does it when I floor it too.

Please help. Thanks

Does it reset after each drive? / after sitting for two hours?

if not you can probably reset it by pressing and holding a button on the underside of the wiper arm. That's where the reset for my Ibiza is anyway

Is this for reading number 2 for overall constant? If so it doesn't change dramatically particularly as your mileage on that round of data increases. It's number 1 which is trip data (automatically resets if car isn't run for a few hours) that will reflect your driving on a particular journey more accurately.

Try reset, in first few hours of driving readings 1 and 2 will follow each other until the ecu figures out that you could average out number 2 over some distance and will settle down, number 1 will continue to change more frequently.

Round Wales my number 2 is always between 59 and 61.9, when a trip journey may only read 55, number 2 will only drop by 0.1 after covering a couple hundred miles without reset.

As above, you need to explore your readings available on the stalk :)

It's number 1 which is reading 42.1-42.7 constantly. Number 2 can read anything.

Not being funny but...are you sure?

Yes yellowcar. Can't be good when nobody knows the same issue. But every time I start the car it says 42.1-7 on the dash. Never says anything different, been like this for about 2 weeks. The second mpg gage seems fine

It does sound odd. So its number 1 individual trip that's stuck there and number 2 works ok? What reading is number 2 giving you? Is your fuel gauge accurate?

As far as I know fuel gage is ok. Number 2 will read anything up to 163 mpg. Just number 1 letting the side down.

. Got myself confused, ignore.

It sounds like number 2 is giving you the 'live' read out, number 1 is giving you the overall average. If that's the case what has happened to your trip read out and why is the live one in position 2?

Let's assume for a minute you are a new owner and go through things from the start.

If you cycle through your data with the large button on the end of the stalk, by default you are in trip data (number one). As you cycle through the first one you come across is the live read out (not numbered and changes frequently). You should then click a few times and get to your trip journey read out (denoted by a small number 1 in the top right corner). When on that readout press the small button on end of stalk above large button and you'll change the data set to overall which will run through the entire clock cycle. It will still be on mpg when you press, but the small number top right has changed to a 2. Click small to go back to trip or large button underside of stalk for 3 seconds to reset.

This isn't meant to sound patronising, I just want to make sure you know exactly where everything is so we're talking about the same thing.

Can't think why your data would be in the wrong positions, it sounds as though they are the wrong way round...weird, as you say

I've reset it, hopefully it sorts it out. 2 is the variable mpg and 1 is the constant. Is that the same for you?

1 is Actual (trip) and 2 is Total memory, was the same in my octy, toledo and corrado iirc

I think the OP cycling through the screens on the stalk end rocker switch is seeing two different MPG options (live) and (trip), perhaps not realising that there are 3 MPG read outs in total? Trip(1) / Trip(2) / live(constant) read outs? Would that explain the confusion/inconsistency with every other Mk1 Skoda ever made?

That's what I was trying to get at, sounds that way to me. I think in my explanation I also got confused and explained the buttons incorrectly, although the principle was there.

Best bet is when on the MPG read out that has a small number in top right corner of screen to then press the large button on under side of stalk once (not holding it in) and see if the realisation sets in :D

I did mention those numbers (and lack of for the live read out) hoping it would trigger some kind of recognition. Think the OP may have realised now?

Not posted in a while, I am assuming new to the car/VAG of this generation with OBC etc just. It's not the most intuitive of control methods doing a single press on the reset button to act as a mode change also.

That's true enough, it works though. I'd probably be more concerned about my overall only being 42mpg, one would assume a lot of city driving, not many big cities in Devon so I think I would hope for higher.
