Engine & flashing glow plug warning lights then engine cuts out when pulling up to stop

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm a first timer on here - so please,be gentle ;-) Any help gratefully received!

I'm in the UK and have a Octavia Elegance 1.9 TDI (Sept 2005 registration).

I am getting the engine warning light staying on and then the glowplug warning light starts flashing. I am able to drive ok but when I pull up in a queue of traffic or at traffic lights the engine cuts out. I then have to turn off the ignition and restart and hope I can get home without having the slowdown/stop again.

I took it to an independent garage and they said that there was nothing wrong in the glow plug system but they found a diagnostic code for a crankshaft problem (I don't know the code). They thought the problem was actually in the gearbox and that the crankshaft sensor was picking that up.  They recommended I take it to an automatic gearbox specialist.

When I gave the gearbox place a ring, he said that I wouldn't be getting those warning lights coming on for a gearbox problem, I would just get the PRNDS light flashing. He said he thought it was a more likely to be some other general engine problem.

I've also seen posts on here about the brakelight sensor but I'm sure the first garage they said they'd checked that.

Any ideas?

Just seen that what I thought was a general engine warning light (the symbol looks like an engine) is in fact a warning light for the exhaust control system! I'm also getting the message "Emissions workshop" followed by "Engine workshop".

The manual says that if the warning light for the exhaust control system stays on the engine management system selects an emergency programme which emables you to get to a Skoda dealer while adopting a gentle style of driving!
