Removing Dashboard/Instrument Cluster Glass?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I recently purchased a used Octavia and while I was driving, with the sun low in the sky, I noticed severe smudging and smearing on the instrument cluster glass.

After copious amounts of window cleaner the marks are still as bad as before.

Because of this, it leads me to believe the marks are on the INSIDE of the glass.

Is there any way of removing the glass so I can clean the inside and remove the marks?

From looking at it it may be possible with a suction cup, but I don't want to start pulling and crack it all!

I hope someone can show some light on this issue and may be able to advise.

I have attached an image and you may be able to see the marks I am on about.

Regards,

Alex

removal of the cluster has been covered on here before, to replace the leds. its very, very easy, and uses a cd disc! just remember the key must be either in or out. (i cant remember which off the top of my head. otherwise you"ll have the airbag warning to reset. )

i havent stripped out the glass but im sure with the unit on a table, there may well be tabs or fixings visible. good luck.

I think you'll need to remove the whole instrument binnacle and IIRC then the front will come off.

I have searched high and low about the key in or out dilemma and I can't find anything!

Nobody mentions the key so I would assume that it needs to be out.

A lot of people have had issues with the immobiliser after disconnecting the cluster, but 99% of these have been caused by not plugging the wires back in correctly.

Still a bit hesitant due to the immobiliser however...

yes, make sure key is out. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/304184-speedo-needle-bulb-led-blown/?hl=%2Bspeedometer+%2Bbulb. to be honest, ive not heard of immobiliser issues. i took my unit out when i went to cartronix, he"d not had problems either. theres only one connection to undo, just be sure its put back in properly. also here:http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/octavia-mk2/vehicle_electrics/electrical_system/instruments_gci/dash_panel_insert/removing_and_installing_the_dash_panel_insert/

Turn out the marks are on the outside.

It would appear a previous owner has tried to clean the glass with a solvent which has attacked the clear plastic and left marks.

Time for a trip to Motorhog or £50 for a new one on eBay!

I managed to take it all off and replace it with no issues so thanks to everyone who helped!

Good to hear you got it sorted without any problems.
