How miles from a full tank ?

i know we have the MPG thread, but how many miles have you managed to get from a full tank to fuel reserve light / how low dare you go?

I'm only 1000 miles in now, so not done a full tank to empty run as yet as the car was delivered with fuel plus a couple of £25 top ups.

I have got a 550 Mile drive at the end of the month from West Yorkshire via Kent > France > Belgium > Holland. Hoping to get there on a full tank, car will be fully loaded with luggage 2 adults, 2 kids.

let say 50mpg,  550 miles, 11gallon of Diesel require which is 50 litres.

It could be close..

I regularly get 700 miles so you should have no issues at all.

Unless you are using a company fuel card you will be filling up in Belgium anyway surely?

If we have to stop on the EU leg of the trip i may top up the tank but it will be at service station prices on the E34,  though im only around 5 miles from the german border also where fuels a bit cheaper than Holland.

Shame we wont be passing Lux this time!

With a 2.0tdi DSG the worst I have had so far was fully loaded, including roof box and driving to and around snowdonia (hilly!) and I got 550 miles to the reserve light (so probably still had another 100 to go realistically). Otherwise usually 600-700 before seeing the reserve light. So think you will be fine!

^^^ your right foot is clearly not as heavy as mine

Last tank first click to first click filling gave me 669 miles on 61.71 litres. 49.21 mpg?

I got 704 miles from a tank last week with a full boot and roof bars on top.

I did 668 on my last tank. 69.3 litres!

Is your garage pumps selling you short Coops?

I thought 66 litres was the capacity.

Hope not Phil.

Took it to the absolute limit this time - was running for about 5-10 miles on ZERO range.

I'm still convinced the tank is 70 litre and not 66.

The tank is certainly larger than 66 litres, I am putting 65 litres in each time and that is just as it gets to the red line.  Currently running at 35/40MPG (511/566 miles to the tank (full to red))

I only fill mine to the first click. That was on BP fuel. The current tank full is Esso and I don't think it's doing as well. No Millers Ecomax in it for a while now. Might have to put it in next tank and see if it helps. I'm sure it does.

When I took the car from my dealer, Columbus says I have fuel for 20 kilometers. I drove to the first gas station (5-6 km away). There I had fuel for about 15 kilometers. Then i filled 69,99 liters of diesel. I have invoice somewhere.

581 miles today, not on warning light though nor far off it.

So do Skoda say you get so many miles from a tank full (66 litres official) when in fact it's 4 litres more. #massagethefigures

I honestly don't get why people get to the dregs before filling unless on a really long journey, and even then you will be stopping to have a rest/change drivers etc and so might as well spend another 5mins filling up.

550 miles at an average of say 65 mph is about 8.5 hours driving.........

I'd much rather fill up when having a break and then not have to worry about driving on fumes.

Each to their own I guess.

I tend to fill mine once a week when I go to the supermarket when not on a longer journey.

Surely then there is no point in the car having a 66+ litre tank in that case. Might as well have 40 litres capacity.

I only fill up when I have to. My local supermarket doesn't have petrol and fuel prices around me aren't that competitive. I do around 1500 business miles a month which is works out to be two tankfuls. I'd never top up at motorway services, where you pay 20p extra a litre at motorway service stations so I fuel up when required.

Its not the capacity that concerns me, it is the draining the tank till nearly dry I don't get.

I never top up at motorway services either, I use the satnav to find a local supermarket

Although i don't pay for the fuel directly (fuel card), I'd rather spend as little time on the forecourt as possible.

Same for me A not the fuel card but time on a forecourt. If I put 20 litres in or 60 litres the time taken is not much different, as most of your time is taken with queuing and paying (if you can use it, pay at pump saves a lot of time!). The actual filling time is pretty small in comparison. So filling up small amounts over 2 or 3 visits takes significantly more of my time than filling same amount in one visit.

I always run my fuel tank as low as I dare before filling up to the brim, and always have done. I love a good game of dare with the distance to empty readout. Not on the motorway of course, as it's illegal to drive on a motorway knowing you could run out of fuel.

Seeing as the fuel is always drawn from the very bottom of the tank via a flow and return system, I can't see the problem with running the tank right down to empty.

Besides, I hate filling stations where everyone dithers around doing their weekly shop, or spending 10 minutes ordering a triple caramel frappucino latte thing, holding every other bugger up!

I like to fill up, pay, and go.

I won't ever entertain filling up at a motorway service area as it's just daylight robbery.

My last tank was 657 miles with a full range of 730 miles.

Well, each to their own. Everyone is different. I hate not having enough fuel in the car to ensure I can get home (unless on a very long journey, and even then I top it up regularly as above). The game of chicken you describe is an anathema to me.

I can't remember the last time I didn't fill up at one of those pumps that you enter your card in advance-no hold ups at the tills you describe.

I only ever fill up at BP or Shell, none of the ones I frequent have pay at pump facilities unfortunately.

And when the car says it has zero range to empty, it's more like 30-40 miles. Skoda put a large safety margin on the range counter. Also, I know where specific fuel stops are in relation to the range on my car. I don't pull stunts like that in unfamiliar parts of the country, with passengers in the car, bad weather or late at night. In those cases, I am always well above 'Bingo fuel' . It's just a bit of fun for my boring commute, as hyper-miling takes concentration and a bit of skill  :nerd:

I love pay at pump, but they're often not at every pump, only a few if at all, and in general I'd rather just nip to an empty or nearly empty pump than wait in a queue to pay at pump. I guess you also couldn't use a company card to fill up at them (my experience is virtually non existent except for filling up a school minibus a few times where you have to give the Reg plate when you pay) so may not be suitable for everyone.

After hours Tesco pay at pump for me.
