Cambus?

What is it?

Do I need one?

I have a 2010 Octavia, Bollero stereo.

Thanks

CAN bus is a method for different electrical modules in the car to speak with each other.

Yes, a MK2 Octavia does use CAN bus for communication. There are controllers in almost every part of the car including:

- Engine

- ABS brakes

- HVAC (air con)

- Airbags

- Steering column

- Instrument cluster

- Doors

- Power steering

- Radio

More information about CAN bus in general can be found here:

Thanks for the help.

So if I fit a parrot bluetooth kit I will need a wiring connector that has a cambus module fitted?

Also when I fit a towbar the electrics will need to compatible with cambus and be 'coded' to the car?

The standard Parrot wiring loom expects a switched ignition wire. This is designed for older cars where they had separate wires to the radio to turn it on/off with the key turned or change the illumination brightness when the headlights are on. Modern cars no longer have this, the radio is always powered and instead messages over CAN bus cause it to turn on/off or change brightness as well as display information from the parking sensors or air conditioning. The CAN bus adaptor (Unika) listens to the CAN bus and will pass this information to the Parrot.

Ideally when fitting a Parrot then you woulduse the Unika as it'll mean the Parrot should turn on/off with the stereo and if you have a multifunction steering wheel (MFSW), its buttons can be used to control the Parrot.

If you don't have a MFSW, then instead of using a CAN bus adaptor, you can find an ignition switched power source from the fuse box and use that to turn the Parrot on/off. I think the only downside of this approach is that the Parrot will power down when you turn the ignition off but the radio will stay powered until you remove the key.

The alternative is to fit a Skoda bluetooth unit as that'll use your Bolero to control it and display the contact information etc.

I've replied to your towbar question in your other thread.

Mate, thanks for all the help.

I''ve only just got the car so trying to sort out loads of things at once, also on a budget which makes things slightly harder ;)

You can just use a switched live from the fuse box.

CAN = controller area network

bus = vehicle communications bus
