Air con not working

Featured Replies

Hi Guys and gals,

Seems like my A/C has packed in, done usual checks, centre bolt that's ok no gaps and not hanging out, fuses fine, pressure is at 6 bar engine off and 6 bar engine running, both rad fans not working either, has anyone got the wiring diagram for the pressure switch please?, its a 3 pin one if it helps.

Its a 2007 VRS if it is the compressor, which I'm now thinking it is, which one do I need, not paying stealer prices £544 inc vat.

Is there any thing else it could be?

Cheers,

Trev AKA Aston Bodger

Trev,

Have you checked the fans themselves as that's what happend to mine when it packed up?

Hi Dan,

Just tried the fans with VDCS, and they work, so back to square 1, tried the pressure switch, no difference, on VDCS the pressure is 7 Bar engine off and on, so looks like the compressor is toast, its done 66,000 miles so don't owe me nothing.

How did u check the pressure switch as I think mine may be dodgey!

Shorted the plug out with a bit of wire, once I finally got the poxy plug off, its a bit sharp and tight down there!!!, and it still did not work, so its something else.

The pressure switch is electronic and not a simple on/off electrical switch so shorting the connection would do no good.

Mine rusted through and allowed gas to escape before it packed in.

£20 replacement from eBay, smeared in silicone to prevent condensation causing rust issues in future.

Same here but just suddenly lost all gas through switch I thought my rad had let go

I have gas in the system, so its not the pressure switch, how ever this morning I had a new light on, it was the oil level sender, so I think the wire has chafed behind the oil cooer and took out the compressor feed?

Anyone?

What is the compressor cut off code? Heating then measured value block 1 field 1?

Just got some info from the measuring blocks;

001

Shut off code                       0.0

Econ                                    6.0

Compressor current actual  0.0A

002

Compressor current actual     0.0A

compressor current spec        0.0A

Compressor RPM                   0/ min

Compressor Load                  0.0 Nm

So looks like the compressor has had it?

Strange. Your code is 0 which means there is no reason for it to not run the compressor. Did you take the reading with ac on and max cooling? If not try that and report back. Also it is showing no amps current to the regulator valve?

So make sure that the 2 pin plug is connected to the compressor

Yes I did try it with the A/C on full cooling, and yes the plug is connected to the compressor, its never been off, so might have a look in a tick to see if there is crap in it. Failing that think its a wire broken, it is a diesel after all?

Trev

Silly question. ..but engine is running whilst taking the reading?

Check out the plug and the wires as much as you can especially around the gearbox area.

If for any reason the A/C compressor is shut off by the control head, MVB code may be triggered. Check MVB 13 field 1 for Touareg and Phaeton systems and MVB 1 field 1 for all other vehicles listed (including 2006 and later Climatic systems). Explanations of the cut off codes are listed below.

A/C cut-off Codes

0 = Compressor on (no shut-off requirement of the A/C compressor detected)

1 = Compressor off (refrigerant pressure was or is too high)

2 = Compressor off (blower motor circuit)

3 = Compressor off (refrigerant pressure was or is too low)

4 = Compressor off (display not currently intended)

5 = Compressor off (no engine start or no engine speed detected)

6 = Compressor off (A/C system switched off, ECON-mode activated)

7 = Compressor off (A/C system switched off, blower switch in position 0)

8 = Compressor off (outside temperature was less than 1.5°C and is still less than 2.5 °C)

9 = Compressor off (display not currently intended)

10 = Compressor off (Low voltage)

11 = Compressor off (display not currently intended)

12 = Compressor off (shut-off request from Engine Control Module (ECM) via CAN)

13 = Compressor off (voltage supply terminal 30 too high)

14 = Compressor off (Evaporator Temperature)

15 = Compressor off (display not currently intended)

16 = Compressor off (activation A/C Compressor Regulator Valve -N280- implausible)

17 = Compressor off (no signal or implausible signal from High Pressure Sensor -G65-)

18 = Compressor off (engine speed too high at standstill)

19 = Compressor off (shutoff request from Vehicle Electrical System Control Module via CAN)

20 = Compressor off (refrigerant loss-currently V8 Touareg only)

21 = Compressor off (Outside Temp < 2 degrees C, without recirc mode on)

22 = Compressor off (Outside Temp < 2 degrees C, Inside Temp. < 10 degrees C)

Yes the engine was running, just tried to have a look and see where the wire goes, and its just started raining!!!!!, got most of the air trunking off and followed the wires back from the A/C compressor, then they disappear into another loom, that's where I got to before the rain come and stopped play.

Thanks for the info, most helpful.

If wires look ok. Next thing I would try is to disconnect the climate control unit and plug it all back in. Worth a shot. It's worked before for me on a mk5 golf. I was getting same readouts as you on that golf.

Just tried the other panel which was in before I fitted heated seats, and that don't work either!!!!, so I really need to find the wires and the plug and check for continuity?.

It's probably something stupid, but its finding it.

Thanks for your help so far.

Right, found the wiring its a 4 pin plug under the big multiplug you can see from the top, also got the plug off the compressor finally!!!!, so got continuity between the 4 pin and the 2 pin compressor plug, now a bit stumped, what I'm wondering now is, the controller sends 12v to run the compressor, and the valve is stuck??, could this happen?

Its a bit of a swine to get to air box and trunking has to come off just to see were the wire is!!! its a PITA, but now a bit closer to finding out what the problem is, still think its the compressor?

Trev

From the measured values it shows no amperage at the compressor. No actual and none specified. You say you have continuity so it still looks like climate control unit is where the problem will be to me.

Hi Flapperjack7,

Just been out again and looks like I have only 9.82Volts @ pin18 on the controller, think that's the problem?, if what would cause it, however I do have a brand new controller, but I think that requires programing )how do I do that/) as the display is funny symbols and when reset it closes all the vents?

I did try another controller and that's the same???, now confused

Trev

New unit will need to be coded. Have a look at ac heating 08 should be able to find out original coding. Then check on vcds Ross tech on coding a new one. Maybe a YouTube tutorial out there. I have yet to use vcds for coding so I'm limited in helping you.

Ah, thought so, well at least your honest about not using VCDS to program things, this will be my first time too, but did try the other controller without heated seats and that don't work the A/C either. So must be something to do with the low voltage?
