Fabia vRS mk1 - FMIC, turbo & hard pipes

Featured Replies

Looking for a bit of advice on a turbo / FMIC / hard pipe kit set up on my Fabia.

I want a hard pipe kit as i've had a standard one blow off a few times now. At the same time i want a FMIC as i plan to aim for over 200bhp, plus i already have a Shark stage 1 map so a FMIC can only be good for the current standard turbo while it's still fitted. I like the look of the Airtrec one but would rather not have to cut the bumper, crash bar and rad mount and i definitely don't want to lose the fog lights and tow strap. The Forge one is mega-bucks just to have something that's a straight fit but would avoid a lot of hassle.

That brings me into the next thing - i plan on an EGR delete and possibly a DPF delete. I fancy a Piper exhaust system but don't know what turbo to go for. I kinda need to make a decision before i buy the exhaust though.

Can anyone make any suggestion about what order i should buy things in. Also, does anyone know if i buy a certain intercooler set up will it come with all the pipes i need so that i don't need to buy a hard pipe kit or not?

Thanks for reading this far!

Kevin

This might get see more in the Fabia Section

I guess you know you will be going the GTB turbo route, to hit over 200bhp. are you getting injectors?

Then you could buy the hard pipes from dark side, and buy a seat sport inter cooler, or the airtech kit. Both will need the rad surround grinding down. Its really not so hard, i managed it :P. Crash bar, you can buy the ibiza one and it fits without cutting, you can pick them up for £20, not heard of people loosing fog/ tow strap... yours is a VRS? The seat sport & airtech dont need to loose fog/ tow.

You need to look into the GTB regarding exhaust, im sure others will help who have gone down this route, i think it needed a 2.5" down pipe.

I wasn't sure if this was suitible in the Fabia section, maybe i'll copy it in there too.

2.5" downpipe is fine with me, that's what i'm looking at. I'm not sure where i read that the fogs and tow strap would be lost, maybe i imagined it. It's a vRS yeah.

GTB turbo is what i was thinking, not sure if a hybrid will flow enough air for 200bhp. I think the standard injectors are fine up to just past the 200bhp level, i could be wrong, i'd rather not change them so if this limits me then that's where i'll stop.

I also want to oeep my 6 speed gearbox so will have the torque limited by a new map.

What puts me off the Seat Sport crash bar is trying to make the bumper fit again properly, i'd inagine there's some adjustment in that.

The ibiza crash bar is direct fit, and doesnt need altering, i think the bumper may need a little grind, but not much. its a lot thinner, the vrs crash bar does need altering.

Im wondering if the fog/ tow strap is for the non vrs front bumper?

Are you doing anything about the clutch?

I understand that 210 bhp and 'whatever-the-figure' nm of torque is pretty much the limit for the standard clutch and gearbox. I'm hoping not to have to change the gearbox to a stronger 5 speed as i feel that would be a step backwards in a way. I'd rather compromise by having the map artificially limit the torque to keep it safe.

The clutch i'd rather not change straight away but if / when it starts to go it would be replaced with an upgrade of some description. Probably an LSD at the same time as i have one on my XR3i and a Quaife ATB on my RST and the difference they make is unreal.

The airtec intercooler will allow you to keep the fog lights and towing eye. The pipes that come with the kit will be more than sufficient.

The standard gearbox is fine for 250+ bhp.

Depending on what your aiming for you may need an upgraded clutch and possibly a single mass flywheel.

Hybrid pd150 turbo will see over 200 bhp.

Mine is running 220 quite safely

cheers for the info - thought the gearbox would be the weak point

i think a hybrid PD150 turbo will suffice with a FMIC and hard pipe kit.

Would be the cheaper and easier option. However although some have seen 220bhp from a hybrid, i think more like 190 is what most would be happy with. Guess it depends on the hybrid turbo you buy?

this is true - i'll speak to Xman at some point soon and see what he can offer.

I'd be happy with a genuine and safe 200bhp

Just my input. My AET Motorsports pd150 hybrid is putting out just under 230bhp safely. with the right spec they can do about 250 bhp.

I have the darkside solid boost pipes and I've had to make a tow strap as it does clash a bit. Very simple and it didn't cost me a thing.

Standard clutch has a limit for around 300ftlb but all depens on how you drive. Uprated DMFs can be had which can handle the torque fine.

My xman hybrid mapped very nicley to 220bhp on a standard clutch / flywheel setup so was quite smooth.

had various other parts, THS intercooler, hard pipe kit, piper exhaust etc..

Cheers lads. It's both of your cars that have inspired me to start looking at performance upgrades.

I'll bend your ears over PM in a couple of weeks.
