Sawtoothing Rear Tyres / Upgraded Suspension

Featured Replies

Just had 2 new rear tyres as they were so badly saw-toothed on the inner edge, and one had a slow puncture.

Obviously need to get the alignment checked again, but have some new front bushes to put in next week so am going to wait until after they are fitted.

The guy in the garage (ex VW Master tech) mentioned that he thinks a lot of the issue with saw-toothing rear tyres is down to too softer rear suspension.

So.. I was wondering whether anyone with upgraded springs / shocks / coilovers also suffered from this issue, or has it fixed the problem?

Thanks

Dan

The factory camber settings on the rear are excessive once the car gets some age on it.  Have your aligner guy set it as close to upright as possible (ideally, you go outside the "green zone" but most places don't like doing it).

I agree with your guys theory about harder springs.  They certainly help, as do better dampers.

I change my tyres from summer (on alloys) to winter (steels) and have never noticed this issue when swapping them over.

The 4x4 may make a difference, but I also get 4-wheel allignment whenever I swap the wheels (pot-hole city in this neck of the woods and they're a magnet for SWMBO) and I've got MAD Helper Springs which may also contribute.

Had my aligned look at mine today. Tyres on rear wern't too bad but alignment check was about -1.75 on the rear. Aligned said once vehicle is 4+ years and sagging a little much better to aim for less than 1 degree on rear to avoid excessive tyre wear...

Same aligner did my mk5 golf and got >33,000 miles off those tyres..

You've got a good alignment tech.  Treasure him
