Retro Fitted Fog + DRL to Facelift Roomster (13) NOT official SK Method

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Couldn't find out exactly how to wire in a genuine Skoda Fit Fog and DRL Kit so used a simple Switch and Relay Method.

No re-coding needed.

Facelift Fog/DRL Units (Fabia MC/Black Version) from SuperSkoda

http://www.superskoda.com/Skoda/FABIA-II/Fabia-II-10-12-Facelift-day-fog-lights-MONTE-CARLO-OEM-Skoda-Autoas

Foglight Loom (Cornering H/L Version) from Kufatec

https://www.kufatec.co.uk/shop/en/volkswagen/polo/polo-6r/fog-light-wiring-harness-vw-polo-6r-skoda-roomster-cornering-light?action_ms=1

Polo Switch (Euroswitch) from eBay

VW Golf GTI MK4 4 Passat 3BG 3B Polo T5 Bora Sharan Headlight Fog Lights Switch

DRL Plugs from eBay - 1J0 973 722

Relays, Fuses, Fuse Box Pins and Wire from -  http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/

ON-OFF-ON DPDT Rocker Switch from Maplin - http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/ip65-centre-off-rocker-switch-n20cl

Method . . .

Remove Protective Grill Fig. 147 A

then Blanking Plate

First remove Protective Grill per Owners Manual

0-DIY-1_zpsqg6mpdkv.jpg

The Protective Grill removes with a lot of pulling as described.

The Blanking Plate is really difficult to remove . . . I ended up having to drill 2 holes in the inner corners and threaded a wire through to pull with sufficient force.

When enough force was used it popped out and I fell on my arse !

The new FOG/DRL Unit clips in and out nicely.

The SuperSkoda supplied unit comes with the bulb holder for a P21W and uses a VW Plug 1J0 973 722

I got a set of plugs with cables+Shrouds made up from eBay but it is cheaper to assemble fully oneself !!!

Fog is an H8 bulb fitting.

LED Bulb from eBay (again)

2B-LED.DRL.Bulb_zpsellnh3ar.jpg

Kufatec Foglight Loom (Cornering H/L Version)

3A-Kufatec.Loom_zps6aaakwnd.jpg

If you can wire into Brain and other points and Re-code then this will do the Fogs

I also wanted the DRLs and couldn't find out OEM wiring method for Fogs so decided to do a Relay Switched install

Make up a new loom

6-Add.DRL.Loom4_zpszmiqpeq6.jpg

7-Add.DRL.Loom5_zpst9o2l0hu.jpg

Loom goes through the front bumper and tucks into the spoiler quite easily and nicely.

Plugs into both Fog Units of course.

Then comes up just behind the Right Front headlight

Earth Point - Right Wheel Arch area

Loom runs in existing cable tidy

10-Existing.CableTidy_zpshoedoznf.jpg

Through handy grommet (DSG so no Brake Pedal)

(50A cable is for a second battery in the boot - Spare Wheel Well)

Polo Switch vs Roomster (Polo is illuminated Pink ! but I don't mind - much !! )

Removal Method - Press in Switch at O Position and rotate right - Then Pull - Switch Assy. comes out.

12-Polo.EuroSwitch_zpsgzn7mlpz.jpg

From online Euroswitch Pinout Diag and Multimeter

NL-[8] is Fog Signal/Power

Headlight SW Signal is [11]

Alternative is Sidelight SW Signal [13]

13A-Euro.Switch.Fogs_zpsunaswxb5.jpg

My Wiring Circuit

13B-Circuit1_zpstka2iwue.jpg

A grey wire from the Kufatec Kit fits into the space at position NL-[8]

13C-Plug.NL8_zpsexlxrj9d.jpg

Headlight signal is [11] White wire - I shaved a bit of wire and soldered my DRL Switch Off signal wire at the back of the plug here.

14-ReversePlug.NL8.HL.Signal_zpsdkqmu4qr

This is what the back of the Fuse area looks like with the covers removed.

I couldn't get to the relay area or the Brain area easily ! so I am glad I didn't have to try to wire anything into the Brain or the relay block.

I ended up attaching my 2 relays (in a modular clip together 2 relay holder) using Velcro to the back cover of the Fuse board.

17-Fuses.Relays.Brain_zpsz91uxmk3.jpg

Next add the IGN Switched Power Feeds to the Fusebox.

One is a Grey wire from the Kufatec Kit and for the other I got a connector pin from Vehicle Wiring Website. Crimp or solder.

15-Fuse40.41_zpssxisrlqe.jpg

Back View - There is a Blue Bar that has to slide out from the end of the Fuse Block to allow Pins to be inserted. Just by position 41 (not shown!?!)

WIP

Relays are now Velcroed to the back of the Fuse Block and the DRL Switch fits in the Skoda position with a bit of reaming to standard Euro SW size - 22x30mm.

Fog Lights - French Style.

DRL - Kryptonite Green

All Done.

Excellent write up sir

Looking at doing this myself at some point

How long would you say from start to finish

Hi,

Thanks.

Took weeks all told to get all the parts and work out how to do it for the best.

Parts from CZ and DE took about 3-4 days to arrive (Kufatec a bit longer)

If you source from Skoda then may be quicker.

Loom took an hour or 2 to make up with plenty of soldering and crimping and Tessa taping.

Earth eye from loom needed replacing as needs 8mm not 6mm as fitted.

Running the loom is pretty quick if you have a DSG/Auto with the handy grommet - Not sure how long if you had to add a hole and grommet ?

Couple of hours adding wires and crimping spades to relay holders. Soldering to signal wire. Fitting earth to dashboard mounting point (under dash - just by left knee!).

Fitting switch.

Checking and testing. Re-attaching fusebox and sticking on the relay carrier.

Tidy up wires (a bit).

Replace clip-in cover above feet/knees.

Tidy up . . .

If you need any extra photos or clarification just ask.

Same for anyone else.

Fun little project and I think the Black Fog/DRL units look great as well as (hopefully) actually being useful.

Great write up, you've scared me off !

:)

It's actually pretty straightforward - Just have to follow all the steps and takes some time, but you can do it in stages (as I did)

Buy all the bits !

Fit the lamp modules

Make the loom

Run the loom

Fit the switch and relays

Hi Petrev, had a bereavement so had other things going on. Now saving up for all the bits. My car is in for it’s first MOT this week and warranty will be finished soon so I’ll be a bit happier playing.

cheers

Hi,

I just used one relay for switching power on each circuit. 1 for Fogs and 1 for DRL .
