MPG 86 PS versus 110 PS petrol engine

Featured Replies

Went on a journey of 75 miles on A roads in the height of summer last year with 86 PS Rapid and recorded 63.4 mpg.Went on the same journey today with 110 PS Toledo and recorded 61.5 mpg.Weather was slightly hotter last year and Rapid had done 8K miles where as Toledo is just coming up to 4K.My experience says there is not a fag paper's width between the two MPG wise.

As it should be really if you are carrying the same weight and at similar speeds which are usually NSL or so.

You are likely not even needing to stress the engines or use more fuel if not using the available power.

Torque is lower down than maximum power.

Questions?

At what speed do you have to drive to get these amazing numbers? (even commuting at 55-60 I cant get close to those)

Are these figures from the dash or calculated between fillups? (my dash readout is 6% optimistic)

What size tyres are on both cars?  (I found the 17's cost about 3-4 mpg on the petrol - one commenter on here lost 7-8 mpg when putting 18's on a diesel)

Do you use aircon?

Having just done an airport run in a 90PS and got about 39 mpg and daily commuting in a 105PS giving a long term 44 mpg average this winter - it's seems like we are not driving the same cars???

I tried to maintain a steady 50 mph and there was only steady acceleration involved. The roads were not crowded. The figures were taken from the trip computer..The Rapid had 16 inch tyres and the Toledo has 17 inch.I never use air conditioning. This was very much a one off journey in almost "ideal" conditions.I generally average about 42 mpg in " normal" motoring as judged by fillup calculations. My point is that despite the general view that the 86PS engine is the pick of the bunch as far as MPG is concerned my experience is that it is no better than the 110 PS.I cannot comment on 105 or 90 PS consumption.

I drive a Rapid 122ps DSG as my daily car. I do a daily commute of 38 miles, mainly duel carriageway with a few miles of country lanes at each end of my journey. I use the cars acceleration freely and probably average about 75mph on the duel carriageway. As it's nice and warm at the moment climatronic is set to 18 deg.

Trip computer has been showing 41mpg on setting 1 over the past few days and 42.3 on setting 2 over the last few weeks.

I doubt if I could put up with the lack of performance from the 86ps and the inconvenience of having to change gear myself.

Over the last 3 years I think the general trend on here is that the 86 is best on fuel and then the 122.  The 105 needs too many gear changes - but on the plus side it is very smooth and quieter too.  Having now driven both the new motors (90 /110) as well, I think the chain drive 105 is the most refined by some distance.  And though the diesel would beat them all on mpg, I could never buy anything with a motor as coarse as the 105TDi.

I drove 86 PS Toledo on motorway at average speed 70 mph and got 48.7 mpg (fillup). Wheels are 16 inches.

Thats about 3 more than my 105 does at that speed.

Manufacturer's specs also show no difference. The advantage of the 86bhp version is the lower insurance group

i hired a seat ibiza 85 in spain for a week.

personally id pick 85 over 105 cos a gear less is nice and more mpg. cheaper to buy too as well.

if i want a fast car. i d buy faster car. dont bother with 105/110.

people buy 85/90 cos they are cheaper to buy, cheaper to tax (not sure), cheaper insurance and better mpg

The 86 seems to have better usable torque and needs a lot less gear stirring in my experience.

(Tax is cheaper on the stop-start 105 though)

I have owned both the smaller and larger engine and I have found that there is very little in it MPG wise and that the 110 PS has the edge in acceleration as you would expect.I was quite content with the 86PS engine in the Rapid and would gladly have accepted it in the Toledo if it was available. The 86 PS was an excellent motor with very well balanced performance but things move on and in my opinion the 110PS is slightly better all round.I quickly got used to the 6 gears and now find that I sometimes think that the sixth

gear is a little low such is the power of the engine.I am dreading trying to find the non existent sixth gear in the wife's Dacia as it is actually reverse in that gearbox!!!!!

We have the 3 cylinder 1.4tdi 90ps.

Its fine for power for what it is. No rocket ship but returns the mpg on a long run.

The little 1.4 tdi is a cracking engine. Been round for years like the 1.9. Totally bulletproof engine [emoji4]

Three cylinders, single camshaft, two valves per cylinder, no common rail, so a much simpler (hence bulletproof) design than the modern TDI CR. Lacks low end torque though.

The 1.2 TDI (3L) was also a very good VW diesel. Drove a 3L Lupo recently, the fuel economy was insane!

I get 51mpg (indicated) on a steady 70mph run - so probably 48.5mpg in reality. Mines a 105 with stop/start.
