1st make sure you have a true Maxidot

To tell you need to check your part number from your purchased clock's.

There is alot of info on here regarding this retrofit.

Ed is the man,and specialist equipment is needed.VCDS cannot do it.

My clock's are sat in the garage waiting for a road trip to Ed.

Coding a used cluster is not a simple job, as mentioned Eddie is your man. As far as I am aware he is the only member who can help which is why a lot of members travel far and wide to visit him.

The keys need pairing, the main ECU needs pairing to the cluster, the coding from the old cluster needs to be transferred to the new and then the mileage discrepancy will need correcting. None of this can be done with VCDS on its own because chances are you do not have the SKC PIN codes for both clusters (existing and new maxidot).

If you have both sets of SKC PIN codes then all except the mileage can be done with VCDS but you'll need the full adaptation map and coding for your existing cluster so they can be manually entered into the new one. Then you'll have a cluster which although working will be displaying the mileage of the original car it was removed from.

Yeah I have read this, have done plenty of mk4 platform cars but never a mk5 will have to have a think about what to do as I want the maxidot in my car and it has taken me a while to find a set for my car

They are maxidot from a pre facelift have already checked that and Eddie is a little far for me to travel just to have my clocks coded in

Are you sure though? Have you double checked the part number's?

It would be a real pain if it was the basic Maxidot, which i found out existed after i bought a set of clock's.Luckily i banged a bargain and not only bought a Full Maxidot but a VRS Maxidot.

They all look the same too.

It's very easy to tell on the pre facelift just buy looking at it as the non maxidot screen is physically 1/2 the size of the aperture.

I'm sure there is 2 type's of maxidot, the basic which does the same as you say above and full Maxidot which is what everyone want's fitting.

I'm searching for the post i read this info from. With part number's.

Yes on the facelift a maxidot and non-maxidot screen look identical when the car is off as they are both full sized screens.

A maxidot screen is an LCD, where as the non-maxidot screen is a simple segmented display.

The only way to tell the difference between the two when they're out of the car is by looking at the part numbers.

The OP was on about a pre-facelift car.

So he will be fitting a novelty spec Maxidot as it's 2006. Full Maxidot is the later type? See where i'm going.

If i remember right 2006 was the change for maxidot spec's...which is why i said it's worth checking the part number's.

No, he wants to fit a pre-facelift maxidot in a pre-facelift car

You're confusing the issue by referring to posts about facelift cars

Or have I got it wrong?

Sort of yes.i included the post to show there is a difference in cluster's by part number's. By using FL as an eg.

2006 was an iffy time for maxidot, being that basic or true Full maxidot.

All i said was perhap's it's a good idea to check before going down to see Ed.

I'd be unhappy if i bought a novelty spec Maxidot and traveled that distance.

I'll go and hide now lol.

I think you're reading too much into other posts and confusing yourself.

On the pre facelift cars there were three cluster types.

Basic. A 1/2 height green-backlit segmented display that displayed the cars mileage, the trip mileage and the time.

This was only fitted to the most basic cars.

Trip: Again a 1/2 height green-backlit segmented display, that could also display trip computer info like MPG etc.

This was fitted as standard to most of the pre-facelift Octavia range.

Maxidot: A full height LCD display. Shows same info as the trip cluster, but can show more on screen at once, and also allows access to setup menus.

This was an option on all cars bar the the Laurin and Klement. Also came as default if you specified the sat nav.

The different options available in the setup menu on the maxidot are dependant on which convenience controller is fitted to the car. This is totally independent of the cluster.

2009 was when the Facelift came out and that's when the non-maxidot changed to resemble the maxidot.

Pre-FL maxidot was all the same right up to 2009.
