Increased Coolant temperature readings

Featured Replies

Having sat in traffic this afternoon trying to get through Oxford, I was surprised to see the coolant temperature gauge reading above 90 degrees (around 110).

Once we got moving again, it rapidly returned to 90 degrees (where my previous Octavia's have always sat)

The air con was on, and that also seemed to loose cool air around the same time, again once we got going again, it returned relatively cold air again.

Coolant level is normal. I haven't checked to see if the cooling fans come on if the temperature exceeds this level.

Looking on the forum, waterpump issues seem quite common. I wonder if mine is on its way out? 14,000 miles only!

Any thoughts welcomed.

yup, most likely a faulty water pump.  Mine failed spectacularly on the motorway with panicked warnings about turning the engine off.

As Sworral suggests, I would take to the dealer as soon as possible.

Unfortunately the water pump is a common part for failure on the Octavia & its better to get it fixed before a real warning occurs.

Your dealer should already be aware of the issue & know the correct replacement parts.

Thanks gents. I have booked the car in for Wednesday.

Took the car in today and the main dealer very promptly diagnosed it as a failed cooling fan. That would also explain why the a.c was not running cool during idle, but was ok once moving again.

Obviously not a common fault, as most of the threads on here point to waterpump failure... that will probably wait to fail next time!

I'm glad it is still under warranty this car!

Seems like good service from your dealer & a nice easy fix.

Whilst there are several people who have needed a new water pump, many more havent had a problem.

I'm 60k km down the road without any mechancial issues.

I wouldn't worry & just enjoy the car.

Plus you have 3 years warrenty in the UK.

Mine overheated this morning. Temperature gauge increased rapidly so lifted off the throttle and just let momentum carry me forward which made no difference whatsoever and it continued until it hit red. Luckily at this point I hit a junction so could get off the clearway and pull the car up. Just waiting for Skoda Assist now. Problem number 473 in 2 years  :dull:

Oh dear. Any obvious coolant loss?

It loses an inch every six months. It's been to the dealers twice to inspect and both times they haven't found a cause.

Sorry, I meant like catastrophic, bust-hose, holed radiator type coolant loss.

No nothing like that. Engine bay is completely clean.

Gotta be water pump then, I think?

Edit: or thermostat?

Assist think it's the waterpump so it's being recovered to the dealers.

:( at least it's usually an easy fix

Hopefully. On the plus side I've got a new Audi A4 2.0 on its way to me to keep me occupied for the bank holiday weekend.

I got my car back this evening and it has had a new fan unit fitted. Apparently the bearings had failed in the original unit, preventing it from spinning.

Very good service from the main dealer again, so hopefully I am sorted for a good few miles. Just an oil change in 4k miles.

I hope you get your car returned soon too James.

James, I had a coolant leak in the turbo so something else to ask the dealer to look at.

They ignored my repeated attempts to tell them to check the waterpump when I discovered the leak initially so I've given up trying to help them.

Still no idea on when I'll get the car back. Chased all morning to try and get some info and was told they have no idea. I'm off on holiday in a couple of days so told them they've got until this evening to let me know what's happening otherwise the hire car they are paying for is going to be sitting in an airport car park for a week until I'm back.

So chasing the dealership all yesterday morning leaving multiple messages for someone to call me back I finally get told at 12 noon that the car was on the ramp having the waterpump changed and will be road tested yesterday afternoon. I was promised a call back by 5pm to let me know if I can pick it up..........no call back as usual.

Phoned all this morning leaving messages and no call back (at least they are consistent!) . At 12.50pm I get a call from the hire company saying they have been told my car is ready so they are collecting the car.....I asked how the hell they managed to get that info from the dealers when I have been trying all morning to get hold of them and I hadn't been told it's ready. I told them I'm not handing the keys over until I hear from the garage. More chasing of the dealer to finally get through just now.....car is on the ramp getting the waterpump changed and will be tested this afternoon and maybe kept overnight. Informed them I was told the exact same story yesterday but she just repeated the statement that it's being worked on. Absolutely useless.
