Filling tank from can.

Featured Replies

Off to France later in the week and I was wondering if there was any problem filling from a can.

If the can has a spout that fits in the fuel orifice, then no problem at all.

Filling cans is not really acceptable in France unless it is to be used by a French person for setting sheep on fire on the public highway.

Then there is the issue that if you are arry spare fuel in cans crossing the Channel or travelling in the EU / UK

that it should only be 10 litres.

20 litres in Metal Cans,  30 Litres max.

You don't mention if you have petrol or diesel.

If you have the diesel, you will need a specially sized filler tube as the Octavia is fitted with a filler-protection device that stops you adding petrol at the fuel station.

To be able to open the flap to feed in the fuel in, you need the correct sized tube.

There was another thread with some links to eBay to buy them.

Ford definately sell them & they would fit the Octavia & I'd be suprised if you couldn't get one from VW/Skoda also.

Not seen on a phone, but to the left it says Estate TSI / DSG and being in the Octavia section it is maybe that car.

Thanks all for your replies.

I knew there was a problem with the derv burners but could not find the thread.

Yet another reason to buy the Tsi.

Or not as you will cover many more km with the dirty diesel on a tank full.

I drove the full length of France last week on Thursday and Friday and can say that virtually all petrol stations we passed on both local roads and motorways were open for business. The 600 miles we drove were from Dieppe to the Spanish border near Santander.

I made sure that I had a full tank at Newhaven and after 2 hours driving I stopped at a motorway service area and topped up with about 20 litres of petrol. I filled up again at our overnight stop near Poitiers which was enough to get over into Spain.

You should be aware that our ferry company (DFDS) did not allow any cans of fuel in the car but I believe a certain amount can be taken on the Channel Tunnel.

It may be worthwhile taking a couple of empty cans in case matters deteriorate for your journey and fill up when in France.

Hope my experience helps.

Just to help the diesel owners reading this, a Ford Fiesta "diesel funnel" from my local Ford dealership cost the princely sum of £2.57 yesterday. It fits and operates the filler restrictor correctly.

My Skoda dealership had earlier checked with Skoda UK and they do not list a similar device - bit of an oversight.

I've just returned from France. I crossed just over a week ago before the problem had been reported by the British press and nearly had a problem when I filled up at my usual cheap "Cite de Europe" fuel stop near the Chunnel exit. Fortunately I hadn't read the restriction signs - I got told off but fortunately the petrol was already in the tank! I saw no evidence of any problems further south although I must admit I kept topping up, just to make sure
